When to replant sabal palmetto seedlings

Good Evening,

I have a seed germinating stand going with about 70-80 sabal palmetto seeds.  I have 4 that are bout 2 inches high so far.  The seeds have been in the seed trays for 1.5 months.  They are getting to big for the humidity cover that goes on top of the seed tray.  Is it okay to replant?  Or should I leave the cover off and let them establish more in the tray?  Would a solo cup or similar size be a good step up to replant in?  I am assuming once I move them out I can throw them out in the full sun.

They send out long roots after germination so i tall cup should work for now, and also, did you get a double Palmetto or was that just two seeds in one spot?

Put them in deep containers. Germinate them in deep containers.

@Honez I have a few going as well. @PalmatierMeg knows best for sure, sabal seedlings are working on growing roots before much leaf growth happens. At 2” of leaf growth it should have 2”-4” of root growth. If you have that many seedlings this may not be practical, but this is an ideal seedling pot super deep. It can stay in there for quite some time. Red solo cup with drain holes is fine. 19E5C5E5-5802-43CE-BA1B-D81C1F68E1FB.thumb.jpeg.11be3d3019ae795a4a7085509ad968ab.jpegThis next stage of growth after you repot and let them grow for a while. Thanks so much.  That back row got 2 seeds in each.  Those were the only seed starting trays I could find anywhere here.  I have several 2 gallon containers but I don’t want to untangle roots.  I went back to all the local nurseries and big box stores and I can’t find any next size up containers.  I guess solo cups it is

  • 2 weeks later...

When is a good time to use liquid kelp and fertilizer for seedlings?  I have transplanted all the seedlings into 6 inch pots and moved them out to get more sunlight.

For sure you can start giving some fertilizer. Good move on repotting them! Sun and heat outside will get them growing
