What do you think of the uresana, looks like it’s been planted for a while?

Well I haven’t even had it for a full month yet, it does look like it’s been growing for some time. I’m wondering how long it took to reach this point.

and the Sabal pics of all varieties are at Barton Springs Nursery in Austin Texas. That’s where I scooped up the uresana.

@GregVirginia7 looks like everyone’s sabals grew a bunch this year. Happy for ya on the adult frond!!! :greenthumb::greenthumb:

Have to correct myself...the McCurtain will have produced 4 new fronds by winter...two are juvenile, one 7-segment adult and another is emerging, about 2” worth...Can’t emphasize watering enough...made such a huge difference in my Sabals’ growth rates...having a particularly wet spring and summer helped, too.

Agree 100% on the watering. I think that’s where they get the reputation for being slow. They’re never going to be rockets, but 4 fronds on a mccurtain is really good

You’re right Allen. I’ve been obsessed with having trunking sabals at my house, I have all 3 of the above plus palmetto, but it will be a really long time before they will have a trunk. I’ve got some spots ready for next spring, honestly seeing your trachys and a few other posters that have about the same climate, inspired me to plant some again.

yea it's tough here in TN.  I consider only the minors and needles as the most sure thing here.  Everything else is subject to dying but Trachy will grow so much faster, I think a 4-5 year growing trachy will be the same size as a 15 year old Sabal hybrid.  But the trachy will need protecting so what you gonna do.  I think those Louisiana you have will take 4 years to be 5 foot tall and 12-15 years to trunk 1-2'.

Here's my biggest with seed  . It's  about 12 feet to the tip of the highest frond but doesn't look that big being that it is in the jungle  . The jungle will thin out with the first hard freeze  :

@Will Simpson that’s badass! I’ve been waiting to someone that had a huge one. Seems like a lot of people have smaller ones, but rare to see one that size.

Same.. I have so many of these throughout my yard and this gives me a vision for what to expect down the road... Glad I started this thread, but ironically enough I haven't posted any of mine.  They're nothing much to write home about yet though.

Posted the first pic below of one of my Birmingham’s in June the next two pics are from today. It put out 3-1/2 huge leaves and grew overall at least a foot overall. It’s been getting close to freezing at night lately won’t grow too much more this year. F678932C-49A0-4AB1-9942-D9D22C3946EB.thumb.jpeg.18ae9801342e17953268ba5b2dc55433.jpegJune 20219A817A13-A462-41BB-AB2A-68679895B15F.thumb.jpeg.46f6be5c019ba62a2c63aaa4c5b04b42.jpegNovember 202191E5451D-FAFF-456E-B184-C83079B37474.thumb.jpeg.0ac76afe67398b3f8bf4125e0239a4be.jpegNovember 2021

Which is the hardiest....hmmm- I have had both S.Louisiana and S.Brazoria return from negative temps

and although I moved in May 2018 there is still a small S.Brazoria alive in the old yard here in southeast Iowa.....

What’s your thoughts on these losing cold hardiness as they start trunking?

I wish I could answer that for you, living in Iowa I don't think

I will ever have that kind of experience with those palms in my lifetime

After 8 years, my Louisiana is starting to trunk, but since the growth point is now above ground, its been more prone to spear rot (even in mild for us wet winter weather). I'm now using copper-based fungicide to control this.

I have two S. Louisiana and they are very distinct from Brazi and Birmingham.  They are really quick growing, and stiffer frond structure..  Gotten a good 6+ new fronds this year since March.

The bigger of the two and has been in the ground for a few months than the one above.  Beautiful palmate leaf already, with another one coming right behind it.

That’s amazing 6 fronds for plants that young. The 2 Louisiana I put in the ground this year were quite a bit smaller, I think they put out 3 big strap leaves so far.

Agreed.  I am quite surprised at how quickly they have grown this year and honestly, the fact my older one already has a full palmate leave, and working on a second is super exciting.

@tlow thanks for letting me post some pics. @Meangreen94z when you posted the pic of the 25 gallon Brazoria for sale at Barton springs it kept nagging at me to get in the car and drive down there. Luckily I took your advice to call first last week before I left. They said they were sold out of Brazorias….and literally every other palm. That led me to drive east instead, stopped at Gary’s nursery, that’s a tale for another day in itself! Hit the beach, and then stopped at Plant Delights nursery picked up a few palms I ordered and me and the wife got let loose to explore their garden. Below has to be very close to all the Sabal sp. they have in the ground.

Sabal brazoiensis. This one was a massive plant. Thank you for posting! ... I would never have left, or if I did it would have been with an entire back of the vehicle full of palms and a lot poorer.  Can't wait to see mine grow up and start taking shape.

Luckily they didn’t have too much to offer palm wise there for sale. I got a mccurtain, brazoria, and a waggie from there. It was past their shipping window for the year so I ordered them online for pickup. That got my foot in the door to get a visitor pass to explore. I think they generally have days set aside for the public or you have to make a tour appointment to get in.

Sabal brazoria I picked up at Gary’s nursery. Put it in that 7 gallon deep pot when I got it home, the roots were busting out of the bottom of the 5 gallon pot it was in. 8DA349AC-3789-4DD8-85AB-7726E1293F7B.thumb.jpeg.83f8affbfedbd6f3aa784060172a87da.jpeg

Oh plant delights? Yeah they do. Palm quality has always been excellent, palm size is very small 3.5” pot. Strap leaf stage for sabals

It's been a while... we're about to get into spring soon (I hope) !!  and here are a couple of palms and what they did over the last, almost first full year in the ground.

Sabal Louisiana.... full palmate leaves, growing, uninterrupted through our recent 18F lows!  Beautiful

S. Birmingham  - The first one I put into the ground to replace some of my losses from last year... growing nicely, blue'ish color on the fronds, and finally has its first palmate leaf.
