Sadleria cyatheoides/ red new frond

I will pay $50 to anyone who can direct me to a mail order source, shipped to SF for this fern.  (Fern Factory shows 'out of stock'.)  I have an existing plant with about 5 feet of stem, but it is entirely and always just green.  I collected it along the Saddle Road above Hilo.   Supposedly the red form is found around Waimea.  Thanks,

I have no source suggestions, but that is a neat plant that I haven't seen before!  You could try posting in the "Let's See Your Treeferns..." thread:

  • 1 year later...

Bump.

I just ordered one of these from Fern Factory and then searched the forum to see if there were others growing it...they currently have 4" plants in stock.

Thanks for the update.  I obtained a plant from Hawaii, from known red form stock.  It has exhibited absolutely NO color in my garden.  I wonder if this has something to do with UV levels at different latitudes ??

PlantMorePalms,  come over for a visit sometime !   :)

Oh that's a bummer. I'll post an update when I find out if I get red growth on mine or not...

Thanks Darold, I came over a few months ago. Later this year an "update tour" may be in order though 😁

Hi Darold, I have a large one with two heads, these picture are from a month ago. Same plant, same location, same time of year. It seems it has more to do with the plant than location, at least here in CA. There are small pups around it and some are red and some are green. This one came from Jim a few years back. I just talked to him about it and he is trying to separate the little ones that show the red color. If you want I can try to acquire some for you?
