Z6 Sabal minors and Needle palm

Hey All,

Wanted to provide an update on where mine landed. Our low last winter was 9F and the last true Z6 winters were 2014/15. I looked at some 10 year data and it does seem we get at least 1-2 weeks a year below freezing. I protected the Yucca rostrata the first year and it flew through. Thinking I should do the same with these? I did burlap wrapped around yard stakes with  a clear painters tarp on top (thinking it would get some mild greenhouse effect that way but still be breathable). The minors all get full sun and the needle gets maybe 2 hours of evening sun (north facing).

Please share any tips you have or opinions on care this summer and protection this winter. I love these things and would hate to lose any of them. I'll probably ask again in the fall what everyone recommends for protection lol.

The larger minors and needle are from Steve in Alabama and the smaller minor is from North East Ohio palms on eBay. I planted them in mid April. I'm also curious if anyone can tell from the pics what type of minors I have? I am newish to this so I know the different types but am no expert on identifying them.

If you don't know the source of the minors you'll never know.  I don't think there is anyway to differentiate, aside from dwarf, normal or large variety.

Give them lots of water in the summer to keep them growing well.

Lots of sun for the minors is great!

North facing for the needle could be alright since the house foundation should help keep the ground from freezing, and the porch stoop should help protect against the wind.

With some protection for the first 2-3 winters you should have long term survivors. I've found that the most dangerous winter condition for these palms, and even the yucca, is days of below freezing temps with wind and sun.

I use oak leaf mulch to keep the soil from freezing as deeply, and a tarp (held away from any foliage) to keep the wind and sun off. I use an opaque plastic tarp, removed as soon as warmer winter weather returns- but some people use plastic trash cans or breathable covers made from frost cloth, etc.
