Help with unwell Kentia palm

Hi there, my roomates plant isnt looking well and i want to help!

Observations:

Currently the Kentia is experiencing dying of lower foliage, and browing on some of the ends of the middle section leaves. Moreover there are some small brown patches appearing in some middle/upper parts of the leaves as well

A few questions, it is potted in a smaller typical plastic pot, and this original pot has been placed into a larger "showy" one for aesthetics, however this larger pot is also filled to the top with soil....is this appropriate? or is the plant perhaps suffering from something like root rot due to there not really being a place for drainage as it can only go into the larger pot filled with the same soil.  The soil is quite dense and black in colour so my guess is this might be the case. Would it solve the problem to empty the larger outer pot so the original pot it is planted in can drain better? or is it okay for it to sit in the larger pot with soil? Also, do you think re potting it into fresh soil is appropriate due to the current soil being dense and and moist?

Thanks
