I'll get pictures up tomorrow as nothing much to report today but they are all pushing higher, even the one I did NOT do surgery on.  The first one that has the dead tissue, you can start seeing not just tissue but rising on the sides, so it's a pushin'... All FOUR are pushing.... I'm incredibly surprised, and happy..

Now when the four big Trachys show up today (bought as insurance to replace these four), my wife is going to wonder wth is going on.... heh.

Its a common practice up north (so to speak) and the only way to preserve some

of the growth of the previous year and go for having some bananas one summer...

to short a warm season here for them to ripen, but very cool when they flower...

so interesting to see the flowers develop and turn into bananas!

I picked up a Blue Java Banana that evidently it's hardy in our zone (minus a polar vortex again), but it's growing like a rocket so far on it's third leaf..

I'll be spending the next few weeks clearing out our woods at the back of the property, and finding spots for everything else.. Here is the stock so far hanging out in our fenced in 1000 sqft garden.

3x Needles

1x S. Louisiana

4x T. Fortunei

1x W. Robusta

4x W. Filiferas

IMG_20210409_150609.thumb.JPG.76fcce4fd6c5b8b555c5d533dbda0f06.JPG

Planted this one the other day... just got it.. S. Louisiana.. the blue underside of the strap leaves is incredible when the sun hits it!  Can't wait to watch this one grow up

IMG_20210409_151149.thumb.JPG.3030910ec275a188c40753aa54b1dd35.JPG

Already has a leaf with 5 fingers

IMG_20210409_151157.thumb.JPG.1e46176773d06bdaed2a37223ce355c1.JPG

Here's a needle I put in the ground the other day

IMG_20210409_151216.thumb.JPG.cfba6c38afbe50832edd228131a66db8.JPG

Today I put in a S. Minor var Emerald Island.. Can't wait to see this one in a few years.. before the animal protection cages went up.  I literally have one of these around EVERY single young palm as something (my guess is a squirrel) has chewed up some in the past, so since these have gone up, nothing has happened.. ugh, what a pain!

Crap the post didn't work.. check out my other thread :-)  I just put everything back up there.. I got them on ebay, the seller was fantastic, quick shipping and they look great!  Found some real nice S. Louisianas over there as well and the seller threw in the emerald isle variety.. S. Minors and these more cold hardy varieties are really starting to grow on me.  I'm still on the hunt for a S. Brazoriensis, and want to add a S. Bermudana to my collection.  The S. Brazoriensis is very elusive... very..

It looks like someone from Mansfield, TX had seedlings but is sold out.
I personally like understory palms.

I had tried giant elephant ears, cannas, split leaf philodendrons and dwarf bananas in my front yard.........They look horrible in winter and they needed more water than I was dishing out.

I now have about 6 sabal minors, 1 sabal brazoria, and 1 needle palm.  I really like them.  Planted them in 2008.  They are extremely drought tolerant and look better than all of the other stuff combined!

I recently purchased a saw palmetto.  They are also small and winter hardy.

OK so it's been a few days, and boy what progress holy cow!  I still provide some peroxide every few days just in case.. I don't see much of a downside to it.

This one was NOT cut as on the day it was to be cut, it just shot this clump of growth out.. and I can see the petiole now toward the bottom of these ugly looking fronds.  Beautiful!!

IMG_20210415_074258.thumb.JPG.1d5e1b778e155df230610e5b2fc95113.JPG

IMG_20210415_074311.thumb.JPG.3171967abeb636d183088ed65b0f7ff7.JPG

This one was cut and is growing quickly as well.  As you can see, I had a battle with squirrels chewing some of the young petioles (3yr seedlings) i have been planting throughout the yard so instead of protecting just one, I've literally bought a cage and staked them in the ground for all new plantings, and gone back and done the 30+ already in the ground.  No more squirrel damage.

IMG_20210415_074323.thumb.JPG.31e1b7168d45f3d046e831b11234b951.JPG

This one is the most pronounced of the cut ones... WOW!

IMG_20210415_074404.thumb.JPG.85ac64c86dac252c8da1369f63850514.JPG

This one is next to the pool and really hoping it would grow... When I sawed it, there was a .25" depression in the middle of the stem, and now, it has pushed above that line, and it is going!  I can finally see not white flesh, but green!!

No clue if these will survive long term or go into decline or not.. but for now, they are growing.. and growing QUICK!

Wow... what a few weeks does in terms of growth.  The sun, water, and heat did wonders.  These things are taking off so fast.

Each spear that pushes looks better, and better... Can't wait to get some big full spears that have no tip damage or deformities.

Well it's been quite a while and figured I had some updates to post.. All four are doing fantastic and out of the four one did NOT need cutting.. you'll see it in the pictures.  I feel by the end of the season you likely won't even know anything happened.

IMG_20210627_163514.thumb.JPG.23d3a577d5540083352bccd62b99a989.JPG

This one below never got cut.. I was about to cut it but that very same day it started pushing a new spear.. this one is a beauty.

This is the second best looking one.. it took off immediately after being cut.

Beautiful ....in a year or 2 you won't even be able to tell they were cut. :)

The rain certainly helped this year and it's been warm recently, but they are still making good progress.
