I don't think it matters.  If you use gravel or that rubber stuff just remember to go back and add organic material to your soil.  I add every couple yrs. before I mulch.

If the soil underneath is good you can just use whatever you think looks good. I hear some people say sugarcane mulch is good for palms though

I use bamboo stalks that I run through my chipper.  It is much slower to break down compared to bark dust.

I think seasoned  hardwood mulch looks the best . I like it when it is brown and rich looking .
