Another non-desert species in Wickenburg!  The things people grow in this town are nuts.  See my Cedrus deodara thread.

I guess everyone has their preference. I looked equally crazy trying to grow several Arizona and Nevada species in Houston. A very expensive lesson.

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't that an Arizona Cypress? In other words, why is this remarkable growing there?

Good eye..   ..And yes, A common enough sight around the valley, more common where he's at/ further up in the foothills/mountains ( AZ Cypress, both types )

No sir.  That’s what I thought too.  But look closer at the leaves - it looks like an Arizona cypress in form and color.

This, however, is what AZ cypress leaves look like (from the internet):

This is what the leaves on this plant look like (again... photo from the internet... I didn’t take a closeup when I saw it):

If I had posted a better quality photo you would nail the ID.

The tree in the photo is a Picea (spruce) of some variety!! Growing where median summer temps are up near 95F for months straight!!

Granted, it’s on the north side of the house in nearly full shade.  But it’s a spruce in the low desert! I’ll be damned!
