Meryta balansae - sun tolerance

Recommended Posts

Can anyone give me an idea what the sun tolerance of Meryta balansae might be in Sunset zone 23, approximately 10 linear miles from the coast (eastern Oceanside, Vista, Bonsall area)?  Do  you think I could get away with a full sun exposure? I have an overgrown 7 foot tall whip that desperately needs to go into the ground. Thank you in advance for any advice you may be able to provide.

Currently, mine gets morning sun then filtered light after that. Last year, I did move it from full day sun as it continued to struggle under those conditions.

I was under the impression that they can take full sun but perhaps this is later when they have some size.

Hope this helps.

You should talk with Len Geiger.  He has offered seed in the past, I believe that he has both genders in his garden.

Good advice from Darold.  There is a healthy specimen in my neighborhood but it is growing on the northern side of the property with extensive shade cover on the south.  The one that I'm referencing is a few blocks from the ocean here in Leucadia.  Based on that specimen and the one that Jim is growing, I think if you had a protected shade spot it would do well for you.  A lot will also depend on your property's exposure and consequential microclimate.

This is a plant I would love to add to my property but space is limited at this point.
