A prominant specimen located at the 'duck pond' ( small boat/trawler mooring basin ) Frances Bay, Darwin,  in full bloom. Spectacular end to a 35 year old palm.158445486_10159270960599873_2178794014967470821_o.thumb.jpg.45cfa97c8aed6dc3e514c1d941a37799.jpg158348317_10159270960604873_2829196373336144041_o.thumb.jpg.1a689635d4275dd1e58f1f58b89c8f18.jpg158638645_10159270960594873_7216014473878283190_o.thumb.jpg.52dbc5aee2a4578fa3c9c159954d36f7.jpg
And my own backyard specimen a couple of nights ago.

Interesting to see the inflorescence while there are still green leaves on the tree!  The only time I've seen one flowering it had no leaves left.

Nice shot! Wowwee- talipot palm doing its thing, one last grand display ( as if its imposing fan leaves, said to be the most massive in palmates) before she croaks! This was such a prized palm when first documented, sorta funny to see it growing at such a commercialized boring locale! Beautiful plant! I wonder if the flowers have an odor?

I wouldn't say they are common in the suburban environment in Darwin, but if actively looking for big specimens, well there are quite a few to be seen. They grow naturally east of Darwin in the Top End, and 25. 30 years ago were actively sold in the local nursury trade, so a lot of the early sales are coming to the end of their lifespan.

Heard it mentioned on the radio but haven't been around to see. You'd know about the ones in Jabiru, they should be getting close to their 'use by date' now as well. I remember seeing them about head height and wondering what they were. Wonder if they'll replant the same when they're gone.

Like the ones flowering at Lake Alexander last dry season....they would've been in that first wave of retail sales.
