I was just given a cutting of Coleus amboinicus. Not surprising for an edible, it is known by a slew of common names: Mexican mint, Cuban oregano, Spanish thyme, etc. - but my favorite is Big Thyme for its double entendre. It's a powerfully (and pleasantly) scented Plectranthus look-alike, succulent and tomentose. I have the variegated form. It's apparently toxic to cats and dogs.

Does anyone have experience with this plant? I'm wondering if it's hardy in 8B. (Dave's Garden has a report that it will grow in 7B Birmingham,  Alabama, which I find hard to believe. The person reporting probably means that it will grow as a summer annual.  Well, duh.) Since it's a coleus, it's easy to root a cutting and bring it indoors for the winter, of course.

It's been my experience that coleus is a slug magnet; this one's fuzziness might make it resistant?
