It was an unusually heavy snowfall; probably a once in 5 or 10 year event. It even snowed on a hill overlooking Canberra called Mt Ainslie, which is only 843m asl.

Okay, I've seen pictures of kangaroos in the snow, but my knowledge of Australian climate is extremely limited.
