Cold Windmill today

Currently 5f outside with a low of 1 tonight and -15f windchill.  Palm is chilly but I’m able to keep the air temps in the box above 20f and the ground is unfrozen.  Coldest weather since trying my winter methods.

P.s. first 2 pictures from last year as I am keeping box sealed

You might want to consider lining the plywood with the pink styrofoam sheets inside to help hold in the heat.  23F for extended periods of time could be an issue, I would expect.

@Chester BThis was the low point of where my temps inside the box got.  They usually rebound to 40f by the afternoon.  If temps outside are 20f+ it stays at 38.  We are just having some extreme cold today and tomorrow.  Currently my windmill is growing into the top of the box so I will have to rebuild for next year, possibly with more insulation.

Ok good to know.  Wasn't sure the duration of the freeze event.  I would imagine a bigger box with more surface area and interior space would be harder to heat and harder to prevent heat loss, so the insulation may be required as long as you have some sort of ventilation.

Looks good.  And palms are doing great up there!  And I think that's a super setup for zone 6a.  I think reducing the width of the box to 18-20" and making it out of the foamboard would help next year when it's bigger.  And I'm not saying you are doing anything wrong but I'd try wrapping mini lights around the palm and then wrapping the frost cloth over that with a thermocube for a test.  In 2018 my palms were wrapped like that with no issues and we got to 0F and 3 days of super cold.  That way you're primarily heating the area immediately around the palm and not the box.  As the palm gets real big you will have to move to a setup like that and eventually no box.

Looks cozy...guess my concern would be the development of fungal infections...my Trachy suffered quite a bit from a burlap wrap I did around the crown that got wet and set off a fungal attack on the emerging spear and surrounding spears...it basically infected the fronds at the point of contact and as they grew in the spring, they collapsed from the weight at the point of the infection...what a mess...anyway, my situation in zone 7 is very different from yours but anything you can do to keep warmed air flowing into the palm would probably be beneficial...perhaps a good dose of copper fungicide and letting that dry before wrapping it up would be good protection since your cover has to be pretty severe, especially if it's going to be a long sub-freeze...All the best...

Supposed to be in the single digits for lows the next few nights so I put some insulation on the walls for added protection.  I know it’s not perfect but next year I will try for a more complete seal.  Side note, the windmill is looking pretty good so far and has seen sub 10f a couple times already!

You must get a lot of people scratching their heads when they see your yard up there, no?
