Chester B 2,933 Report post Posted January 29, 2021 (edited) Locarno, Switzerland has old jubaeas. https://www.coastalbreezenews.com/articles/the-palm-trees-of-switzerland/ Do a google image search for Locarno and palm trees and you'll see lots. Mostly Trachys though. Edited January 29, 2021 by Chester B

There are two large ones outside Ticino (where there are many centenarian specimens) that I know of and they are close to Lake Léman (or Lake Geneva in English), the largest body of water in Switzerland and one of the largest lakes in Europe. Thus, the climate is comparatively mild. Even though you can see them, this is by no means "in the alps". Unfortunately, I don't have a photo. I just remember he had a Tyrolean house, it was probably not in the alps itself, but you could see huge mountains in the background. As i Remember it he went to chile found the tree he wanted and imported it.

EastCanadaTropicals 165 Report post Posted February 2, 2021 I don't agree with what he's doing. He is taking a endangered tree, and grabbing it all the way to Switzerland.

Collectorpalms 1,836 Report post Posted November 27, 2021 (edited) Even Brahea Armata look good. These are all on the lake edge. And a younger Jubaea, Trachy, and Sago. Someone had a neat idea of planting med fans under Trachycarpus so they look like clumping Trachycarpus to most people. Flow 235 Report post Posted December 16, 2021 (edited) The region around Lago Maggiore is by far the mildest place in Switzerland and milder than some areas further south. It is sheltered from cold arctic winds by the alps. Here are some more pics: Trachy forest in a hotel garden in Lugano This Washingtonia and the Phoenix were almost completely defoliated in 2012 but they grew back. Butias and Jubaeas were unharmed. Jesse PNW 622 Report post Posted December 17, 2021 You guys should see Hutch's Trachy forest. Hutch I really hope you load up on pictures of the place before you take off. I'm still hoping I can make it down there with my wife one of these days.
palmfriend 1,926 Report post Posted December 17, 2021 Have been to Switzerland many times - for skiing, too (Jungrau-region spectacular) - and was aware of some warmer pockets but this... is almost unreal... (no doubting the origin of this image at all!!) However, great documentation - next time I hope to see those Jubeas by myself! regards Lars
