As it says, ruins and things. Abandoned places, cool middle of nowhere findings etc. let’s see where you’ve been or what you’ve seen.

I’ll start. I have no idea what this is, I only went to look at the filifera. Obviously includes a shade structure of some sort.

Have shared these two in the past: glyphs from South Mountain Preserve/Park:

DSCN5249.JPG.31484cf8e567b40ad7cdf72d33cee310.JPG

Not sure how recently ( relatively ) these were built but numerous in the park as well. Wouldn't mind building something like this.. and stuffing it full of Ferns, Bromeliads, Orchids:

Look closely at the flat rock above the closer, oval shaped one ( roughly the 12:30 position in the picture ).. See the people holding hands?.. Didn't notice it until i started editing  pictures from this most recent trip. May have to see if there might be more hidden in the same general spot. Also at South Mountain, along the Pima Canyon Trail.

It's a confirmed case.  Thus far, haven't pulled the pin on that one for various reasons.  If I had my pick with no constraints, I'd probably head to Laughlin.  Career-wise though it is almost certain that I'd have to be in the Las Vegas area.

Agreed. No constraints I’d head to Laughlin or possibly the hills around Palm Springs myself.

Gotcha... Was going to say  depending on how often you'd need to be in an office in Las Vegas, you might be able to split the difference.. Depending on whether or not you'd be able to work from home more often than not..

While you may be dead set on the Las Vegas area, had heard Tucson was proposing paying people to move to the area.. Not sure which professions though. Minus the casinos, you can almost touch the mountains/ desert on either side of town.  Supposedly on track to attracting numerous big businesses over the next couple decades, from what i have heard..  Easily the epicenter for desert fever.. lol.

Some drought exploration. Great Salt Lake, Utah.

“The Hesperus” - a sunken crane that fall off a barge during a surge in the 1960s. My last visit, was to the top half of the crane via air boat. This visit was simply walked: (bottom photo from summer)

Hey Ryan when you're in northern Utah you should check out the old Pony Express trail west of Dugway, some of the most remote terrain you'll find anywhere in the lower 48, several old structures once used by the Pony Express, my brother and I have found old abandoned mining towns with structures.  My buddy actually found an old Colt pistol out there.  Also wild horses, antelope (pronghorn).  Lots of stuff.  Sorry I don't have pictures.

Look at the deep blue in those skies in the above photos, that particular color doesn't happen ever here in Ohio or really anywhere else in the US except the arid west.  Although my next move will take me to S Texas, I'm always a western boy at heart.  Bright sun, clear skies, red rocks, my profile photo was taken in Zion National Park, one of the most beautiful places anywhere.

This is my favorite area of Utah.  I have found many of unmapped things in my day. Deep creeks are probably my top.

Deep Creek mountains are great, that’s where they found the thought to be extinct Bonneville Cutthroat Trout.  It’s a very little known range yet it’s peaks are over 12,000 ft.  And those towns over there like Callao and Trout Creek, man those are remote. Lots of abandone gold mines around and stuff, some neat stuff to explore out there for sure.

A sweltering June adventure - fortunately it was too hot for visitations from venomous reptiles.

A couple ( of several i've seen pictures of ) " Trincheras " ( Small rock dams built across ephemeral / seasonal streams or steep hillsides to reduce erosion / build up degraded stream beds / restore water infiltration ) built by Indigenous people in the past from out at Oak Flat..  Supposedly some Cliff Dwelling - type structures ..similar to those i'd  observed near the Apache Tear Mine last spring..  and Petroglyphs  out there as well.

Idea with these kinds of dams is to allow sediment to back fill the stream bed over time, thus reduce the process of bed cutting. Such structures also allow water to infiltrate the soil better / recharging of groundwater sources as surface water flow ceases between runoff events.

In a very remote corner of Southeastern AZ, installation of such structures and Gabions ( rock filled structures encased in steel baskets ) has helped restore part of a large Cienegas that once occupied the San Bernardino Valley, and helped raise the water table there 30ft in the midst of a 15+ year drought ( original article was written a few years ago )

Couple more rock dams, etc. encountered today..

Found a ( very steep ) trail leading down into Queen Creek from one of the overlooks along the way up to Oak Flat today.. Aside from the sign referencing Climbing / finding artifacts, following it, found one reason i'm not fond of steep- sided mountain roads partially buried toward the bottom, lol..

Couple more rock dams observed at the flat.. Not quite sure why the one in the 3rd picture was installed.. Don't think it would be stable enough to cross.  Tough to say who installed the first one.. Has definitely been in place for some time though ( Face of it is covered in well established clumps of Lip and False Cloak Ferns. )

Almost looks like a dog herding sheep or goats.. I know the Native Americans had dogs, but I don't believe they had domesticated sheep or goats... Maybe hunting them?
