I live in Charlotte county. It is a jungle as there are only narrow pathways to walk through. I have large trees that form a canopy as well.

First year my potted variegated ginger ‘Tahitian Flame’ p.p., has bloomed. A triple threat, being an upright clumper, with attractive foliage, and the flowers have a nice scent. ^_^

I have to make a correction... I think this variety I bought is actually Hedychium "Dr. Moy," although it does look a lot like "Tahitian Flame."

Not 100% certain of course, but i thought Dr. Moy had solid green leaves and flowers a shade or two more Orange.. but not so orange that they could be lassoed in with the red / red-orange -ish flowering cultivars / species.. Wheres our "musing" emoji face when you need one, lol..:)

I think they both have variegated forms. " A vigorous growing ginger that spreads rapidly. Grows best in part sun in areas that are hot and have long summers. Banana-like leaves that are variegated and peach colored, fragrant flowers. Flowers look like Dr. Moy. " (From a description of "Tahitian Flame": http://www.onlineplantguide.com/Plant-Details/3427/ ) :hmm:

Curcuma amada or Mango Ginger[turmeric] Indonesians call it Kunyit putih .

Smells of green mango and can be used to make a few delicous dishes

Has an impressive infl. that is just emerging now ,

picfs on other laptop will add later.

Another unusual one is Zingiber pelitum . Hairy foliage sp. from Thailand that does go dormant.

Just emerging now. Have set seed on it a few times recently and shared it around a lot . Should be a lot easier to source now.

I just got an Hedychium deceptum (rubrum) ‘Red Butterfly Ginger' today. The nursery states it has: "true red flowers... grows 3-4 feet in bright shade to medium sun. Hardy in Zone 8 and above." Picture of blooms is from the nursery site, but the plant they sent (picture from today) seems very robust. Apparently this isn't always commercially available. I think I'll plant it with a bit of bamboo overstory to shade it from the most intense summer sun here.

Less than a year from when I got it, my Hedychium deceptum (rubrum) 'Red Butterly Ginger' is blooming this morning. Awesome flowers but no scent apparently. Well-behaved, cold-hardy, under 4 ft in height, this plant is in a large pot with offshoots that stay close to the original rhizome, at least so far. For me it's a keeper that won't grow as tall or as rampant as other gingers. :D

NEVER! HiHiHi. I have worth things to fear - like air potato :blink2:

I had it for sometime and it doesn't make seeds. The heads just wilt.

Although I don't think Costus dubius are a declared weed in Queensland, many consider them an environmental weed. But here we have two things that keep them in check. Mine seed profusely and produce large numbers of seedlings. However, most seedlings don't survive our dry season and of the rest few survive our marauding Bush Chooks. Closer to sprinklers they seem to do better.

My only 'regret' is that Hedychium deceptum (aka rubrum), in bloom this month, has no scent. Otherwise, it's a short, hardy, bright red, well-behaved ginger that I keep in a big pot in my pergola.

Dusted off this thread to post photos of my Costus growing in the high dappled shade of a live oak.

While I was volunteering at the botanical garden, I noticed that a couple of stem fragments wound up on the floor of the vehicle we used to transport them. (No, really!) From these, a couple of years later, this intrepid plant is thriving in three locations. I remember the genus but am blanking out on its specific epithet. If you know, please chime in. Here's the bloom:

20210803_065333.thumb.jpg.33a9a734bbc982b780f3d9f8759d7a77.jpg

Do I have to worry about it being too successful?

ETA: Appears to be C. pictus?

I like blooms in shades of orange in the garden and when I spotted a member's ginger, requested a rhizome cutting which he was kind enough to send me.
