Premature browning of Coconut Fronds

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have noticed that most of the coconut palms in my neighborhood have started to have lower fronds that brown premature while still holding the 3 o´clock position. This past month we had 2 nights in the 40s for over 6 hours and 2 days in the high 50s (Miami area). Although cold, i'm wondering if this was enough to bother the coconuts, or is this normal behavior for South Florida cocos after winter cold snaps? Note, this is not lethal yellowing. I would appreciate your thoughts.

@chinandega81 I see leaf necrosis during the winter as well, even when it doesn't freeze here.  This winter has had extended periods of below average temperatures.  Some palms don't handle extended chill very well.  Coconuts are one species that doesn't like extended chill.  That might be what caused the browning.
