Got my own freak show

I walk past this palm 1,000 times a day, drive by it, it's mine, right in the front of my house. Yet until this morning I didn't notice it turned into a freak. Because the split so close and the angle of the palm you might not notice this until you get to a certain angle. Not really sure which Archontophoenix this is, other then Archontophoenix var freak

2 for 1 special! Any idea what might have caused it to split- maybe storm damage?

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

Storm damage is a good bet. It's old enough to have gone through Irma.

That's really an impressive picture.  It shows the strength of nature and the will of this palm to survive. Hope to see pictures again i a few years.

Palms about 17 years in the ground so it's seen many storms, past that I have no idea what caused this, it's always looked very healthy, and still does.

We had a mimosa tree in my backyard when I was a kid. Had a really similar split after it got hit by lightning. This is a whole lot cooler, IMO.

Hey its the freaks that eventually change into new species sometimes. I hope someday my garden will have a "freak" palm!

What’s really weird is how symmetrical they are. It’s like it was torn in half and healed.

Has anyone ever tried to do this intentionally?  Or is it a one in a million chance it heals like this?

I really doubt it's possible to do intentionally.

Yeah many freaks get weird deformed heads but this one has 2 perfect identical heads.
