Any thoughts on the best planting location for Butia x Sunkha?  Butia wants full sun and relatively dry, the only place they don't seem to grow well in central Floriduh are in consistently wet spots.  Everything I've read on Sunkha and FL has indicated a shady spot is preferred, particularly some summer PM shade.  I'm guessing the hybrid may be somewhere in the middle, but I can't seem to find anyone who is growing one in this area.  I have a wide open, hot, sandy, dry spot in the front yard...but that might not be ideal for 1/2 of the hybrid?

I had two strap leaf JxB hybrids from Patrick.  Both didn't live 2 years.  Taken care of, but didn't ever thrive.  I lost a JxS, which was painfull.  I also lost 2 jubutyagruses this year that were several years old.  One Is left out of several over the last 4 years.  I tried a new method of trunk cutting to keep it alive.  Seems to be working.  I'll post the method within a month, but it seems to have promise.

Here are my two in-ground hybrids.  The first is a bigger JxBY, planted in November 2020 from an oversized 1g pot.  This was really late to plant them, but the hybrids have all really suffered here in pots during the winter, so I took a risk.  It's now about 6' wide and 3' tall, and took no damage during the 24F cold front.  The palm directly behind it is a Chamaerops Humilis for a size reference.

The small one here is a BYxJ, planted from a 1g pot in October 2021.  It was all yellowed and ugly looking and really mad at being in a pot, and grew 2 nice bluegreen leaves over the winter.  It's in the East side yard, which is a degree or two warmer than the backyard.  It also took no damage during the estimated 26F cold front.

My other JxBY is still in a pot, I really should have just planted it and risked a transplant later.  It spear pulled a couple of weeks ago and I've been dosing it with a Daconil + hydrogen peroxide mix.  I also have three B x Lytocaryum Weddelliana and one Butia x PJS in pots.  I'm going to plant at least one of the BxLW in a week or two, but haven't figured out a good spot for the BxPJS.

My Jubaea X yatay spear pulled.  Just too wet and cold for too long.  I also had two Jubaea X odorata that spear pulled.  Even half my Trachy spear pulled this year.  They are all pushing new growth, but ugly.  The yatay X Jubaea looks really good though.  That one was totally unfazed.

Yatay x Jubaea is a real winner They’re gorgeous, fast growing and very hardy like Jubaea. I’m being super impatient with my two I want them big! Although they were 3 strap leaf in December so doing well. So far J x Yatay doing good, also was 3 strap leaf in December, but keeping an eye on it even Patrick says they’re “finicky” and prefers Yatay x jub.

The last few of Patrick’s creations I’ve acquired, some Trachy hybrids. Nanus x Nova, Nanus x Waggie, and Nova x Princeps Stonegate form (my favorite of the 3).

I think the J X Y will be a real stunner eventually.  It has a more upright growth that reminds me of Butia strictor.  I think it will be more elegant compared to the thicker growth of the Y X J.

Funny you say that I just got a strictor of Patrick’s. Kinda liking it, Butia werent my favorite but it and my Eriospatha are really nice looking forward to their growth. The strictor is very straight up almost no arch to petioles.

I spotted good news today on my spear pulled JxB.  I noticed that the opening where I pulled the spears out was a bit bigger diameter, so I carefully tugged out some of the furriness and one of the old dead fronds, and there are two new spears growing!  I marked them in red lines in the below photo.  They are pretty pale right now, so I'll probably toss a bit of Osmocote in there.  I've learned my lesson with JxB and BxJ in pots, I will be planting this one out as soon as the new spears look reasonably healthy.  I cleared out a spot in the front yard yesterday afternoon, so maybe in a week or two it'll be in the ground.

My Butia x Lytocaryum Weddelanium seems fine with the recent brutal Texas heat. It also seems to be a favorite target for local birds.

Wow, that B x PJS is rearin' to get out of that liner lol Perfect placement of that BJXS, it looks really nice between the two windows and the nice bed you made. Keep us updated as the years go by, it will fill in nicely.

That is the plan as I have been meaning to make a thread of my plantings so far. Front yard is mostly Patric hybrids and backyard I have a small planter with various Chamaedorea species. What can I say I'm lazy with technology haha Hoping the live oak cover will help the BJxS In our wet winters , otherwise will have to install an awning above it =/

C. Plumosa (if you can find them) have grown at absolutely stupid rates for me. I'm on a wait-list and would absolutely trade a few of my established potted palms for more. Again, full disclosure, everything I own is in a pot and I can bring it inside during winter events.

I dont personally have this hybrid, but I would say that it looks likley. I will be getting a couple if still available when I visit Patrick on the 4th, upcoming. I will post pics if they are present.  I think it looks good though time will tell more.

my yatay x Jubea was a fast grower.  The above hybrid is about as fast as a pure jubea like in this pic

On the way back from San Diego trip. I could maybe pick up a few extras but I consider my self fortunate to an invite to tour his garden, and a guest so I want to be respectful not ask too much. I’ll try and bring back some extras though depending on room and budget. But unless folks came to my house to pickup there would still be shipping involved so really would serve no better than contacting him. But I’ll see what I find!

Any more hybrid growing/size updates, or anyone else have anything new from patrick to show off? or on the way? what you get/got!? Hopefully one more showing up for me today, ill post pic when it arrives.  Growing season coming to an end soon here in the PNW. Ill do a walkaround of everything I have and how theyre looking, when I get a chance, Patricks and otherwise.

Not a ton of impressive growth on my (BxJ)xS this year, only working on its 3rd new frond. It has filled out nicely though since January (first photo). It sulked for the crappy first half of the summer we had, only really started pushing new growth in late July. I'm hoping it will pickup speed next year. I had to hack back the dahlias a few times this summer as they started to smother the palm, I should probably just remove them and give the palm some more space. I believe I still have the most northern Patrick creation up here @ 49 degrees north... go me.

Zone 8b, Csb (Warm-summer Mediterranean climate). 1,940 annual sunshine hours 
Annual lows-> 19/20: -5.0C, 20/21: -5.5C, 21/22: -8.3C, 22/23: -9.4C, 23/24: 1.1C (so far!)
