Washingtonia North of Charleston

Hello palm lovers,

I know there have been topics about this before, but I was wondering if any of you knew of other locations of Washingtonia palms north of Charleston (Columbia, coastal N.C., etc.) that have not been mentioned before. There are three locations that I know of in Columbia, which I will put below. It is remarkable how big they get there. Wilmington N.C. had several quite large Washingtonia that I know of, all of which have died, so I was hoping for some good news about some that have survived in that are as well. Thanks!

Thanks for responding! I just finished looking through that thread and there are tons of giant Washingtonia in Myrtle Beach. Amazing! I also love the Phoneix canariensis. Some of those are massive! Thanks again for sharing!

I'm shocked about the ones in Colombia you posted. They are huge and look very healthy. I'm surprised there aren't more (or are there?) in that area.

I know, they are massive! There are definitely many more in the area (I have seen pictures of them on Palmtalk before), some of which are as large or larger than the ones I posted. Thanks!

I scattered handfuls of "fillabusta" seed (collected from under the palm at the Ft. Fisher NC aquarium) under that things dead carcass in the carpet of Liriope.  I went there the other day to check if my guerilla planting took, but there was construction happeing in that parking lot and I didn't stop.

Absolutely! The winter of 2018 took some of them out but it's amazing how many of them pulled through and look as if nothing happened. There are quite a few phoenix species in myrtle as well, mostly all residential plantings but I have seen canariensis as well as sylvestris hybrids utilized in commercial settings.

Yeah, it is amazing how many Washingtonia survived the 2018 freeze. I went on Google Maps to look at some of them and quite a few look to be at least 30 years old. I didn't know Phonix sylvestris or hybrids of it could survive in Myrtle Beach. That's amazing! Thanks!
