Has anyone had luck germinating Areca catechu from seed packaged for consumption?

With the cold and all I sure won't be giving this species a try. I know the seeds are commonly sold (including online) for consumption. Do these have any use for germinating? I know recalcitrant tropical seeds don't last long anyways, although pretty much every other method of procuring these seeds is no guarantee of freshness. Interestingly some of the packaging used seems to keep the seeds moist, though I'm not aware if the liquid used could harm the embryo.
