Anyone else growing roystonea princeps?

I got my roystonea princeps quaman I don’t know how long ago. Maybe 7 years ago? Not really sure. At the time I had Regia and borinquena too. That year I had a wicked winter and saw a week of below freezing nights. Only this was the only one to not only survive but also had minimal damage. It’s grows pretty quickly as it was about 2-3 feet tall when I got it. I have a pretty small yard so I really like that it has a thinner trunk and crown compared to the other 2 I had. As always post pics of you got em.

Hmm

i have one too and I’ve heard it’s one of the hardiest royals.

The neighbor’s elm is muscling in on the crown shot a bit.

I’ve had mine about as long as you’ve had yours @Stevetoad

Nice looking and as you note it fits better in smaller yards than it's fellow species in the genus.  I've never tried these, but there are a few large specimens of one of the other species of Roystonea 3 blocks south of me, and up the hill from me, so I know Roystonea's can do well here.  Maybe something to consider if I kill something else eventually.

  • 1 year later...

Bump on this thread. Out of all the species I’ve researched using palmtalk and various sources, this one might have the least amount of information on it.

I just cut down 2 queen palms and looking for replacement species. I won’t be planting the bigger types of royal, but was thinking these might work? How large do they end up? I’m hoping about the size of a large king or queen palm.

Any updated pics on these? Or info?

thanks!

Dustin

Hi Dustin, there’s a massive one at Mt Coottha Botanic Gardens in Brisbane, Aus. I couldn’t find a photo of it but it’s got to be over 20m/70’ tall. Girth not quite as large as R regia or oleracea but significantly bigger than even the largest S romanzoffiana or Archontophoenix.

Gosh, I’d forgotten I’d been the source for Steve’s. I got a number of them from Floribunda about 10 years ago. I heard they stayed relatively thin, hence my initial interest. Mines chugging along in a drier part of the garden and looks good. Probably 25 feet tall and 16” to 18” at the base. Tolerable, as royals go. Note the heavy speckles on the crownshaft.

On the other hand… Neighbor Terry’s (same seed batch) has developed the most massive trunk I’ve ever seen… 43” across the base, wow…..

Thanks for the pics and update. Damn that’s a thick one. I don’t think I could risk planting one and then it getting that big for the spot I’m thinking of. Need something no bigger than a queen. And I don’t know where to even purchase one. If there’s any more pics out there I’d love to see them though.
