Looking good, Alex.  Keep up the good work.  How tall would you say it is in overall height?  And for that matter, how tall in overall height is your tallest one, and what variety is it?

Thanks John. Golden malayan dwarf (or so they said when I bought it on ebay as a single leaf seedling) . I'd say 10-11 ft. tall overall. The fence is 6ft, but the cocos' trunks are a 1/2 ft. below the fenceline and this one has its tallest leaf another 4ft. above it.

How old is this one? You must be doing all the things right, beautiful looking palms you have there :-)  Do you still protect them during winter? I wish I can grow mine in the ground like yours. A bit too cold for my climate.

One leaf-seedling in 2016. That's when I planted it.

I do not protect (tarps, etc) 4 out of the 5 cocos. Except for the 75W brood lights when temps are at 8C or less during winter nights.  Lights are trained at the soil and for my oldest, at the meristem.

That palm is one short step from starting to trunk, for sure.  I’m excited for you Alex!  Even if the actual trunk doesn’t begin to show for another year or two in your climate, that is one super healthy Cocos and it will be trunking before you know it.  All of your extraordinary effort has paid off.

LOVE! I guess ours are around the same size? Maybe mine is a tad larger, but could just be an illusion since mine is in the middle of the yard.

Looks like those are planted a bit too close to the wall. You’ll likely have problems as they fatten up.

Looking forward to it!

Great efforts were made from the beginning - and now, Alex, you get rewarded!

If your palms keep growing this way, you are making history in the world of palms!

best regards -

Lars

How far do these beauties spread their roots?

Coming from the tropics and growing in full exposure in habitat, you'd think they have pretty serious root structures, would that be right?

The ones I've seen growing in the north of our state seem to have a reasonably compact rootball, I've seen them growing quite close to walls and buildings and they don't seem to cause any grief. I've seen them in Broome where the rootball has been quite exposed due to erosion from rain etc....and it's been a fairly tight ball of fibrous roots., I suppose that doesn't mean they're all like that but the ones I've seen where you could see the roots seem to be pretty similar.

Zone pushing you say?? Oh man, it looks like it's "at home"! Just look at that trunk! It will certainly start pushing hard in your incoming spring and summer. :greenthumb:
