Today is the equinox when day and night are roughly equal right across the globe.

Roughly is right... it does vary a bit depending on latitude. Darwin's equal sunrise-sunset hours were back on the 13th Sept (  0643 and 1843 ) Today ( 22nd ) it is 0636 and 1843.
