Palms, Plants, and Peace. September Backyard Post

Recommended Posts

Be forewarned, this post is picture heavy.

I decided to grab some photos from my little backyard today to show the palms I have, landscaping, and my little outdoor living space before the tropical storm/depression moves in.

So, lets jump into it:

Coconut Palm update: Suffered transplate/shipping shock but over the last week the new frond has been pushing out, which is a good sign.

Here is an update on the ((BxJ)xS) that I received earlier this year. It has grown a number of new fronds, and has been recovering nicely, though growth has suddenly slowed, and I'm not quite sure why.

Here is an update on my little Bizzie thats gone from a strap leaf seedling to palmate this year. Thats exciting!

Here is an update of the Silver Queen Palms I got from Michael in the spring, this one I have potted in particular has done the best, grown the most comparatively, and has the most tomentum on the base:

I was going to wait to post an update on the Sabal Blackburniana I got from Phil until the 1 year mark, but I got excited and took pictures.

It has grown 6, going on 7 new fronds since it arrived, growing more blue/green and larger each time, and today I noticed it pushing out 2 at once.

I planted this Agave americana this spring, for the simple fact that I had no where else to put it, to my surprise it has doubled in size and appears happy.

Some Hawaiian Punch Colocasia, and Hedychium gardnerianum  that might get moved next spring... its in far too much sun I think:

Some Heliconias that have struggled this year. We had such a mild spring, they didn't get going until mid summer, and have since developed some strange issues with the leafs. Im not sure what to think.

Lingulata:

Excellent gingers! I'd love to have those on my garden. I've been trying to find some colorful foliage from plants other than crotons and coleus.

Good job.

Are the plumeria in the ground?

Obviously gets hot and humid... how cold does it get for how long?

I got my alpinias locally, the hedychiums came from Hawaii, the costus was local, and the curcuma was around the coast at a big box store. I love crotons, and will probably incorporate a few in the landscape next year as annuals. Unfortunately it gets too cold here for them.

Hey @TomJ No, they are potted and I just got them as cuttings a year ago. They rooted very fast, and have exploded with growth and flowered this year which was super rewarding. They've also went to seed, and I attempted to cross pollinate them this year, we will see if I was successful later in the week.

We really don't experience COLD until Mid January. Our first frost date is typically mid November, then it warms up with temperatures in the upper 50's and mid 60's in December, with lows in the 40's or so, then January brings the cold into mid February, and by mid march everything is waking up for the growing season again.

Don't get me wrong, my area can experience teen's but typically they aren't prolonged freezes, and those temps aren't terribly common (in my area).

Thanks @Palmaceae Alabamas climate is considered humid subtropical according to the Köppen climate classification. And this year has been quite exemplary of just that, with the exception of spring temperatures. This spring was the longest coolest spring I think I can remember experiencing. Anyway, all that being said, Alabama arguably also has the largest biodiversity of any continental US state. So it's interesting how many different plants the states climate can support. Pretty interesting.
