Transplanting Bismarkia Noblis

Hi all,

I'm a newbie that found love for palms (especially Bismarck Noblis) during our island lockdown here in Aruba. I've read a lot of posts on here and tried germinating bismarck from seeds. Had luck with a few seeing that we have a constant 32º C weather. Made a setup of 16 inch pvc tubes and to my luck they started sprouting their first frond! Unfortunately I noticed today that the root protruded the bottom which is covered with a type of fabric.

My question is, should I transplant these and into what size pots can these roots be bended to fit pots? I know that Bizzies are very prone to root disturbance which is why some input on this would be highly appreciated.

Greetings from Aruba, One Happy Island in the Dutch Caribbean!

Hi Robert, welcome to Palmtalk!  You're doing well with the seedlings!  I am growing some myself and had the same thing happen, but I was able to repot the seedling into the same container.  It now has 5 strap leaves and appears to be starting adult leaves now.  I'm not sure how to advise you other than I have read on this forum where members have potted up seedlings directly to 5-gallon sized containers but that seems to be a bit large to control moisture in my opinion.  You do have to be careful about disturbing roots with these but I believe you can bend the roots some as long as they don't break.  Be careful with that fabric because any pressure applied to it by pulling it apart can compress and slice the root.  Hopefully someone who has done this can respond and share their experience.  I've been to Venezuela before but haven't visited Aruba yet.  Such a variety of palms you can grow there!

@Fusca

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I'll keep the fabric part indeed in mind! Also, do you know when the seedling stops depending on the seed?

thanks for the input!

Not sure when seedling stops depending on the seed but once the seedling has a couple of leaves I'd say the dependency is much less than at the early stage.

Update on the Bizzie seedlings. Most have/are start shooting their second leaf/frond. The last pic is a failed one, got tangled up by it's own radicle and didn't make it  :( .
