Here are some Sabals with massive crowns. They are at the University of Texas at Austin campus.

Wanna guess what kind they are?

How about this skinny guy? Too bad I don't have a reference. It is definitely the skinniest Sabal I've ever seen.

That uresana looks awesome.

I am very confused with the Sabals in Austin. Pretty much all Sabals here look just like the large ones in the first four pictures. In Zilker Botanical Garden and Mayfield park they are all labeled as Texas Sabal (Sabal texana). When I do research it seems like texana and mexicana are used interchangeably, however these Sabals seems to be missing the fibers under the split petiole base characteristic of mexicanas. Perhaps even my mexicana is not mexicana.

I thought the first two were mexicana and the 3rd was possibly uresana.  Maybe it was just the brighter sun on the 3rd one that made it looks more silver/blue.

Those are all shaded mexicana. 99% of the sabals in austin and san Antonio not in front of an in-and-out burger are mexicana. They come in all shapes and sizes just like people. Take a trip to the sabal habitat in Brownsville and take a look at native stands and you'll see a wide variety.

Agreed. I like the look of the S palmetto used at their Texas locations. Ours is using “robustifera”.
