Lemurophoenix Leaf Event

Lemurophoenix halleuxii opens only a few fronds per year, so when a spear cracks open, it's an event to celebrate! (post your leaf events!)

Planted June 2010, my "three screaming lemurs" as I refer to them, had a dramatic setback during the nearby volcanic eruption in the summer of 2018. It has taken this long to get some decent sized fronds on the center palm that was most exposed to the SO2 gas.

Three sequential mornings of the opening frond:

This center Lemur was the tallest of the three until the eruption (note the lower left deformed leaf), but now it is getting close to catching up with the others again.

This is spectacular Kim. I sure wish I could grow this palm. I don’t have anything spectacular to share right now but thanks for sharing this.

Wow, absolutely beautiful! Here are a few of our Lemurs! Definitely not as big as yours, can’t wait for them to be that size tho! Definitely a Palm I enjoy watching on the daily!

Kim, This is a spectacular palm , thank for sharing the leaf pics.  Do you remember how big were they when you planted?  1g size?  How tall do you figure they are now?  10-12'?  Seems like a super slow grower, wonder if they pick up speed once they begin trunking....

The center palm was in a 7-gal. and the others were in 2-gal. pots.  I'd say they are 12 ft. at this point. EDIT: Center palm is 15 ft. and the one on the right is 18 ft. with the spear. Had it not been for the eruption, they'd be taller now. Still waiting for them to pick up speed, but I don't know for a fact that they do. Having seen them in Madagascar at a height of at least 60 ft., I'm content to enjoy them at eye level now.

Thank you, seems that adage “best time to plant was yesterday” is true for this one.  Glad you’re enjoying them at this stage.  I have so little room for large palms but decided this species is gonna be the exception. Made a plan to pick a few up this week!
