Here’s a quick view of the Licuala ramsayi var. voyeurensis.

Right out my shower stall with a window outside.

I acquired that Licuala and its sibling from JD Anderson like 12 years ago. That one's in the good spot; the other, at the base of the Tuckeri of Doom, is literally one-tenth the size. Too much root competition, I think. Also, the one out my window gets rain and sprinkler water off the roof of my house.

Well these grow in tropical swamps in the freshwater part of tidal rivers and estuaries so you are replicating it’s wet habitat then spot on.

Here’s a full Monty shot of the Peeping Licuala; it’s about 2 M or 6 feet overall. The Shoe is an American size 13, 13” long.

Here’s the runt more like one fourth than one tenth the size of the other. That’s an Archontophoenix tuckeri trunk.

I have a soft spot for Licuala ramsayi. Dream of having something like this in my back yard. Alas, a dream it shall remain. :crying:

Why?

Isn’t your place in habitat?

No, miss out by about 1500 kms. It's just too hot and dry (very low RH) here in the dry season. Botanic gardens in Darwin has some really nice groves of them, they're right on the coast and get the cooler humid sea breezes. They also have good canopy and a public funded (by tax payer) water supply.

I was sold some "L. ramsayi" years ago but looks like they were really L. lauterbachii. Planted them in my swamp but unfortunately the swamp is a dry dust bowl in the dry season. Two of these palms are still growing but extremely slowly. Only because they have supplementary water. Although got some Livistona benthamii and Livistona mariae rigida growing well in the swamp without supplementary water.

I visited Dunk Island in 1984.  The sound of the overhead, closed canopy of fronds rustling in the wind was wonderful, a memory I enjoy to this day.  :greenthumb:

I have a sprinkler that sprays onto it, and it runs down.

My Ramsayi is very slow growing albeit healthy enough. Well over 20 years in this spot. Sees very little sun and is in competition with other very large palms including water hogging natives such as Carpentaria, Livistona benthamii and a ginormous Coryphya utan.
As @tropicbreeze says, in our climate you have to pour the water on in the dry season to get them looking good ( speaking of which I noticed a text from our Power/Water suppliers this morning reminding me to pay up ... ). The drying winds and low RH are not their friends.....
