Silas_Sancona 7,795 Report post Posted June 12, 2020 Not sure if any of our fellow weather nerds had heard but looks like the extremely popular Cat. 6 Weather Blog over on Weather Underground has been ended by the corporate powers that be over there.. Pretty sad to read this earlier this afternoon.. That said, both Jeff Masters, who originally started the blog, known as "WunderBlog" back in the day, and his frequent co- pilot / contributor of blog articles, Bob Henson will be starting a new blog over called "Eye on the Storm" over on Yale Climate Connections site.. so no, their great articles won't come to an end. Bob also has his twitter account. Jeff masters apparently is on Twitter.. but looks like he doesn't use Twitter much. Anyway,.. While the YCC site doesn't currently allow for comments, that is being worked on. Heard Moderators from the Cat. 6 blog will be moving to the new blog as well.. Will be interesting to see how this develops.. Let alone how much further W.U. will be run into the ground.. 1

While W.U. isn't nixx-ing them ( yet.. ) I really hope someone else will provide an alternative place for everyone w/ personal weather stations / data from them to go.. Pretty much the only other reason i visit the site anyway.
tropicbreeze 788 Report post Posted June 12, 2020 I used to get on WU a lot years ago but it began to change. Had forgotten all about it until you mentioned it. Weather sites come and go I suppose. We had Northern Chasers here for some time which was really good but that drifted slowly over to Facebook and the original site eventually shut down. Went to Weatherzone but then they shut down (might it have been something I said???? ). Unfortunately now the replacement option is pretty . And it's not only weather sites. Used to be on various invertebrate, reptile, frog, etc., sites but they've just faded into cyber space. We live in changing times.

Very true though Jeff Master's blog had been around for quite some time, since 1995, i think.. and didn't have to end -on Weather Underground.. That's big business though, take something good, keep tinkering w/ it until a shell of itself, then toss it. Facebook is a great example.. Ruins almost anything it touches. Glad it logged off back in 2017, esp. in light of recent opinions by Zucky... Have to tap myself along side the head whenever i get a rare itch to re-join, lol.. Wonder if Jeff regrets selling to IBM..
greysrigging 2,759 Report post Posted June 12, 2020 I've been a member of quite a few forum groups.... and indeed the fading away is quite noticeable, with FB Groups taking over the chatter..... I think demographically, Forums are the last bastion of an older age group who value manners, civility, respect, temperate language and simply sharing stories and pics without the smart a*** comments, insults, derogatory personal attacks, and just general tomfoolery on FB Groups. Younger people are not so much forum users.....all the Social Media platforms are their thing nowadays Admin rules/guidelines are essential on Forums as well as FB Groups... if they're not Moderated correctly, they tend to fade away as the idiot factor takes over. 2
mdsonofthesouth 539 Report post Posted June 17, 2020 (edited) I got rid of Facebook like 3 years ago and don't regret it at all! I now have zero "social media" and I'm 36. Facebook was full of self involved people and extreme left and right politics addicts...NO THANK YOU! As for weather underground I'm done after the last update ruined the app and removed the widget. I now have to click and wait to view the humidity...once again NO THANK YOU!! Edited June 17, 2020 by mdsonofthesouth
