My Foxy’s First

The Gerg

Recommended Posts

I recently noticed a bit of a bulge under the old leaf base of one of my Foxy Lady’s. (Hard to notice in the picture)

Now that the old leaf base is loose enough, this weekend I decided to take a peek. Yep, my suspicion is correct, my Foxy Lady’s about to show it’s first flower spathe. Awww, they grow so fast. And yes, I know, these are really just ornamental, but I’m still kind of excited to enter this new phase with this one.

Here she is in all her glory. These pics also taken this weekend.

Thanks for looking.

Congratulations! Your palm has entered adolescence. That first spathe is very thin like most palm's first attempts. It might be an empty spathe but any of the next ones will likely pop flowers. :)

I have 2, they got so tall you would never even know I have them. Fast fast growers, yours is a great size to enjoy right now.

How old is the foxy lady?

And it looks happy.

I don’t know how old it is exactly. It was sold to me back I think in early 2014 as as I think about a 6 ft. tall 7 gallon and lived in a pot awhile because I was fixing to do a complete backyard remodel. Once in the ground it took off.

I also have two. My second is a little younger but has basically caught up to this one. Anyone who owns these palms know how fast they are. I documented my other one in a thread called Fast Foxy.

Just a follow up. A second flower sheath under the next leaf base as well revealing the classic “stick em up” pose.

The first outer flower sheath came off......

Revealing a second more crinkled one beneath it.

A couple days later I gently helped that one off. It came off quite easily without a fight.

And wallah! My Foxy’s first flower.

Nice! If you wind up with some baby plants in a year I’d be interested!

Not likely.  Mine has been flowering for almost 10 years...No viable seeds.

Nice Senior Greg.  Yours appears to have flowered relatively young in my experience.  I have 3, two at my old house and one here in Leucadia and only 1 has flowered, and that was this summer about 10 years after I planted it.  I was bummed because it appears my gardener at the rental trimmed off the inflorescence.  It was between tenants so we were doing projects at the house... one day it was there, the next time I was there after he came it was gone.  The one here in Leucadia is just about 10 years in the ground and still hasn't flowered with ringed trunk about 11" -12'.  Consider yourself lucky, unless I'm unlucky.  I did snap one photo of the open inflorescence before it disappeared back in May and the one behind the fence is the one that still hasn't flowered.

That seems to be what I hear most.

I do feel lucky. I have another that is younger but caught up in size. No sign of inflorescence yet. Bummer the gardener cut it off. Imagine if these were known to have viable seed. I bet you would have blown your stack.

What if there is a flowering wodyetia bifurcata nearby?

I’m not sure. I think a couple people have had some rare successes with germination but I can’t remember their method.

I recently saw some small ones on eBay but the price was hefty and so was the shipping.
