Finally gave in to the blandishments of the milkweed people and started a butter garden to preserve the maybe or not endangered Monarch Butterfly

Got freebie plants and bought a wacko cultivar

A good start. Just remember to cut it down in the winter..  Tropical Milkweed is a double edged sword for Monarchs ( and Queens.. the other Milkweed lover ) . Lots ( and lots.. ) of articles discussing the issues w/ it online.

Might research some of the regionally native sp. and add a few, over time.. Several that come from Southern CA. are extremely drought tolerant, present really showy flowers, and big, tropical looking foliage..  esp. the following:

Asclepias erosa, Broad leaved Milkweed

Asclepias nyctaginifolia, Mojave Milkweed

Asclepias asperula,  Antelope Horns

Asclepias californica, California Milkweed

Asclepias vestita, Wooly Milkweed

..If you can find it, Asclepias albicans, one of the two " Desert " Milkweeds ( the other is Rush Milkweed, Asclepias subulata ) can reach a height of 10ft.

** All of the Desert, and near - Desert species are easy to start from seed also, no need for cold pre-treatment before sowing, unlike most of the species from back east / higher elevations.

Forgot to add, for everyone in Southern and Central CA:  Take a look at the following info provided by the southwestern Monarch Study.. an on-going research project aimed at more detaled data regarding how Monarchs migrate across the region, California included.. Very interesting observations being documented thus far..

https://swmonarchs.org

https://swmonarchs.org/southwest/Monarch Migration and Breeding.pdf

**Checking it twice, Last Half of the second link may not take you directly to the file.. Not sure why.
