RICK P. 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2020 We have a 6 foot Pony Tail Palm in a planter that butts up against our pool. The base of the palm is starting to grow over the concrete and coping of the pool. We love the tree, but I am concerned that it might crack the decking or coping of the pool. Is the root system strong enough to do that, or should I not worry?
gtsteve 1,327 Report post Posted May 23, 2020 Mate, you may know that your Pony Tail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is not a true palm, it is more closely related to Agave. Although slow I'm pretty sure that it will damage your pool. The bases do get huge and can swell and shrink depending on the water that they get. Mine is 20 yrs old 4.7 metres around the base and about 20" tall. It is hard to see because it is inappropriately in the middle of a palm garden. It does not look good because it is always wet and is often shaded. I think that the root system is strong enough to do damage but i'm only guessing. Hopefully this bump will get you some more informed opinion. Welcome to the forum Rick. 2
