Albino bottle palms

When growing palms from seed, every so often,a few will germinate without the capability to make their own food.Compare these two to their green brother (same batch)

Looks like they are finally running out of steam, but amazing to see they have made it this far; just on seed power alone.

It's weird when this happens. It almost makes you want to try and find a way to fix it, but oh well. In the old days, certain growers would try to sell them as oddities or 'specialty seedlings' at plant sales. I have seen this in a fair amount of Latania seedlings, including partially aborted seed off a female tree that were not pollinated. They get one or two leaves, then poof, gone.

These seedlings have some red/purple pigment. Plants use these pigments for photosynthesis also. These pigments are not as effective as chlorophyll, but plants will get some food using them.

I've gotten a few albino seedlings over the years. I feel sorry for them because I know they're doomed. Even so, I plant them in their own pots and care for them until they run out of seed power and pass on, which can take several months. Guess I'm a softie.
