Pinnate palm leaflets not unfolding

RJ

Recommended Posts

On a few of my pinnate palms this year I have noticed that when the spear is pushing that the individual leaflets aren't opening/unfolding creating a droopy looking frond that is rather flaccid looking as it pushes out. I have seen this on a butia, mule and queen. Any thoughts on the cause?

@RJ would love to see what your talking about cause I have a really droopy Mule that pushes leaves that seem to be to heavy to support itself. I have tried isopropyl numerous times with no fizzing. Was thinking possibly nutrient deficiency since it's in a raised planter and I went longer then usual between feedings. This was a very mild winter so I doubt cold damage at all. I show mine once you show yours  :floor:

Assume you mean H2O2 and not rubbing alcohol. But here you go. First palm is a yataxmule , second is a b. Yatay the last is a small queen. Not sure what is going on but clearly with the exception of the rigid yatay the other two are having issues. Not sure what is causing the flaccidity

sorry about the nasty hands I just got done rebuilding the carburetor on my Jeep

@RJ  Are they all in pots?   The drooping almost looks like dehydration as a cause.  I see soil in the pots and all but are they root bound with no soil in the bottom of the pots?  Otherwise they look healthy.

Yes all in pots. Been in pots all winter outside. The queen is in the smallest pot a true 5g Lowe's bucket. The other two are in 15g. We had a very wet winter and since it's warmed up I have kept them well watered.  They have been given a round of palm fertilizer about two weeks ago, I tend to go light on the application. They are all actively pushing new growth, so not sure if the next one will be normal or not. A waiting game at this point.

Not sure if you can tell the newer frond on the right is so heavy the palm has a clean to it =/ I have had zero luck with mule palms haha but a learning experience none the least

That looks to me like there was a fungal issue at some point. The ends on mine are totally normal.  If I'm looking at that picture correctly,  the end of the frond looks okay, then it looks like it had a fungal funk to it. I had a queen do that exact same thing last year. It grew out of it.

So its weird these last 2 mild winters it has had this lean to it but obviously grew out of it and put on some major girth last summer. This year same lean but the fizzle ends is new. Hopefully it grows out of it again if not I'm over mule palms haha
