Phoenix theophrasti sucker

Recommended Posts

I trimmed my Phoenix theophrasti and removed this sucker today and wondered if I could possibly root it.  The only thing I can think to do is what I've done with Cycas revoluta suckers.  Anyone out there done this?  Did you use a different technique?  As you can see it has no attached roots.

hey Fusca,

Warmth, hope, moisture, and prayers.  It is a crap shoot.  I have gotten a couple of date palms suckers to root before that had no roots.  Patience young Luke!  Luck plays a big part.

Can you use a rooting hormone? Usually some form of willow is used.

RJ yes of course you can use rooting hormone.  I think Fusca has his soaking in a solution of it now.  I say it can only help the cause!

It won't hurt to give it a shot (I already avoided the spines!) and no harm if it doesn't work.  Makes for an interesting quarantine project...

Thanks for the encouragement!  Got some good advice from @jimmyt who has succeeded with this in the past.  I treated the base of the sucker with an antifungal and soaked it in a root stimulater solution.  I also trimmed off 3 of the outer leaves.  It's planted now in well-draining soil in a spot that gets roughly half a day of sun.  It maxed out at 88 F this afternoon and 92 F forecasted for tomorrow with cloudy skies before cooling off again to the low 80's so it looks like it's going to get off to a good start.  It probably won't make it due to its small size and no existing roots but it might make it.  Time will tell.

Hi, We are all doing fine here. Though their is complete lockdown, daily essential food & grocery items are exempted. One member of the family can go out to do shopping with a face mask on which is being made mandatory by the Govt. And cleaning hands using alcohol based sanitizer.

Since now i have spare time iam repotting some adenium plants. And keeping myself occupied.

The present situation was seen only in few Hollywood movies, like Contagion, Its available in amazon prime.

Btw Italy,Spain and New York city is badly affected by the present Pandamic. Its a very painful site to see and hear in news channels.By the advent of summer season will reduce the spread of this infection.Hope this true.

May God be with us in these testing times.

Do take care,

Kris.

love conquers all..
