Bismarckia nobilis (Post Yours)

It's about 6 years old, growing slower in the Azores, and is wobbling. Probably because the planter has a tall rock bottom inside on one side occupying more than half of it and then it slides down to a deeper ground which has got no bottom and it was planted a bit on the high side, exposing the roots for 1/2 inch or so, so perhaps the palm pushed itself up a bit and never released its full potential roots into the soil. I added sand under it and I hope the roots will be released or I may have to stake it. Would staking it potentially damage the sensitive roots?

These guys are here in Phoenix, AZ.  Bought this guy as a 5g for maybe $30 about 5 years ago.  He’s probably 8x8 now.

Bought this guy for over $500 in a box at the same time.  He’s maybe 10x10 now.  Next time I’ll just save the money and let them grow!

Look at that anthocyanin content!  Your palm has the most anthocyanin(purplish red) I've ever seen on a palm, any palm.  Must be pretty cool there year round.

I had to dig this one up and move it. It stayed in suspended animation long enough to almost get the axe. Pic one is the day it finally showed life again and the second is from today. About 7 years between shots.

I was going to make a comment about the purple water ha ha!  I bought this one as a 5 gallon at the end of 2018 and it hasn't grown much yet.  I was told that the more purple they are as young plants the more silver they become and subsequently more cold hardy.

Are you talking about my messed up palm? My climate is explained in my profile in detail, yes, it is cool year round, no frost and no heat. Is that good or bad?

That's crazy because I had one looking the same for a while but because I planted it as a seedling basically and my gardener at the time hit it bad with a weed eater. Well it's looking much different now days. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow.

Definitely not one of my faster growing palms but, considering it’s in mostly full shade here in Northern CA, I can’t complain. It was a very small (12 inches tall) 5 gallon plant nearly 15 years ago.

Planted as a 1 gallon strap leaf in 2000... They are a fast grow here with our extreme summer heat averaging 105F for 4 months each year.

Nice palms. What happened to sunset zones, do you know? I am trying to understand my sunset zone in the Azores. Perhaps SZ1?

I lost one of my bismarckia to palmetto weevil last summer.   Here is my other one 10 years this summer from a sick 3 gallon.  It has been a great grower, fast grower.  It has 8-9' of clear trunk and has been setting seed for ~5 years.  As a mistreated seedling at a big box store I saved this one, too ugly for people to buy apparently.  Had mold on all leaves, intact spear with some reddish color.

I mean what happened to (California) sun set zones of sun set website? There is no longer link on their website linking to American sun set zones. I know they can not create sun set zones for Azores or for Africa or for Europe, but I am hoping I can apply one of the California sun set zones to my climate, perhaps one of SF Bay or coastal LA?

Here's mine. Starting to get some size to it but not as colorful as some others. I got another I might plant that's very silver so maybe it will hold that nice color but still a cool looking palm. Need to clean up around it.

You need to Google “Sunset zones”, not “sun set zones.” Sunset is a gardening and home idea magazine that’s been around for many decades. They created their own Zone maps because of all the inaccuracies of the USDA zone map.

Thanks, I finally found the link: https://www.sunset.com/garden/climate-zones/sunset-climate-zones-california-nevada

If someone creates plant hardiness or sun heat zones for the entire world. Would they be able to match every location with one table (map). My Sunset zone would have to be at least 35 to have the historic low at 45F, but the highs at the very maximum 82F.

Except that the higher numbers don't necessarily have anything to do with warmer climate. I'm in Sunset zone 16 yet some of the zones in the Sunset 20s actually have colder annual temperatures. The chart is much more sophisticated and it involves humidity, fog, rainfall, maximum highs, minimum lows, wind, cold air draining potential, elevation, and all sorts of things. My USDA zone is 10a.

This is an opportunity for IPS members to create such a chart or a formula where every plant enthusiast would (or already did) spend years observing and recording as per your words:  humidity, fog, rainfall, maximum highs, minimum lows, wind, cold air draining potential, elevation etc. and then providing it into one pool website etc. in order to create some kind of system of plant hardiness zones. Such a formula or an online form where one enters all the observation data into it and it spits out your exact PHZ. Some may say that may be unnecessary, but it sure is interesting.
