Winter’s Numbers/Where are you?

In South Florida, we are enjoying what is likely our last cool breeze. That stated, it is possible to now look back on the Winter of 2019/2020. In this area, it has been exceedingly warm.

Using the Trewartha climate classification system, the designation Tropical (A) applies to climates in which all 12 months average  18 degrees C. or 64.4 F. This is the norm here but this year has exceedingly warm. Specifically, the following constitute the average temperatures for what constitutes our Winter. December/2019-72.41 F.; January/2020-70.56 F; February/2020-72.41 F. These temperatures were compiled at PBIA. The low temperature took place on January 22, 2020, when we had a high of 62 F with a low of 41 F. The low temperature at Mid-Town Beach was 45 F according to the lifeguard station. Ocean temperature has not dipped below 72 F.

What were your numbers this 2019/2020 Winter?

I’m not sure about averages but minimum temperatures in the Houston area weren’t bad. Where I live, near Galveston bay our low this winter has been 33-34 depending on the weather station. There are four within a half mile of me and those were the temperatures they were showing on our coldest night. Most of Houston bottomed out between 30 and 32, while the northern and western suburbs were in the upper 20’s.

While our ultimate low was abnormally high, we have had our fair share of average temps on top of some solid slightly above average and bellow average streaks.

14F was my low, 8a winter in a 7b climate.

Dec - 45/30

Jan - 46/31

Feb - 46/32

December is usually the warmest winter month, not the coolest, it was close to average while January and February were noticeably warmer than average. First totally snowless February on record too.

USDA zones and low temperatures do not define climate. To know what “grows” you need the average temperatures during the winter months.

Eureka, Ca. likely qualifies as an 11 USDA but you do not see many coconuts (50/40). Corona,Ca and La Quinta,Ca have coconuts but I suspect an incredible micro-climate.

Bottom-line it is your average during the colder months that generally determines what “grows” in your area. Extreme low temperatures also play a role but your heat is very important. Check out your location on Weather Underground under monthly History! Just a suggestion!

December - 67.18°F

January - 65.89°F

February - 66.43°F

Those readings are approximately 3-4°F warmer than average, and are from the Treasure Coast International Airport (FPR) and that is typically a degree or so cooler than my location.

The low in my backyard was about 38°F (for about 1 hour)

I am always scoping the vegetation here looking for micro climates and micro, micro climates. Coconuts have survived 25+ years in speaking with homeowners who have very large specimens. Foxtails, Christmas Palms & Arecas do very well, mangos & avacados are everywhere. I noticed that the landscape and parkway Royal Palms in my area appear to be shorter than Palm Beach and south, though they are very robust. I don't know whether it is due to climate, or whether they didn't catch on here until relatively recently.

One thing I haven't noticed, except very occasionally, are iguanas. I think that speaks a bit about our climate here as well.

Wow! Weather Underground had me hitting a high of 84F in December!? That's crazy. I smell fake news lol :P This fits perfectly for the "global warming" agenda. Look back several years from now & whada you know! , we have on record a warming tend...  see all you na sayers, proof in the data :floor:

Seriously though my winter temperatures are extremely exaggerated. I'll go as far as misleading. I bet no where in the Inland Empire of SoCal even possibly Coachella/ Palm Springs area reached 80's in December. Please correct me if I wrong?

I think with all our mountains & interference it's hard to get accurate temperatures in California without having a personal weather station at your house. I noticed The Weather Channel app has been off several degrees ( 6+F) all winter long for my area.

James,

I see you are in the High Desert in Hesperia,Ca. Weather Underground directs to San Bernandino which is 2,000 feet lower and that cannot be accurate for you.

Checked Palm Springs and February 2020-62.95; January 2020-59.93 and December 2019-56.56. Highest temperature was 74 F in December.

Eric in Orlando had these numbers at the airport: February 2020-66.34; January 2020-64.6; December 2019-66.76. That is Tropical!

Trust me this has nothing to do with any warming event. I find Weather Underground data to be reliable in large degree but understand the Ca. microclimates make it risky.

That makes more sense. Thanks for the clarification :greenthumb:

I didn't mean to discourage anyone just pointing out the inaccuracies for my area, as we know out west is more complex. I did find that The Weather Channel was closer to my actual temperature looking back from December 2019 to today.

Warm winter in many places. Orlando, Brownsville/Harligen (RGV) tropical I suspect Melbourne is close every year. I am not certain where the John Wayne Airport is in So Cal but they had interesting temperatures not tropical but warmer than other parts of So Cal. Specifically, Feb. 2020-60.98 F; Jan. 2020-59.11 F. and Dec 2019-58.52.
