Put me in coach. Palms waiting in the bullpen just hoping to be planted this spring. Not all pictured are going in of course but some will.

For sure the D. Pembana (seen in 1st and 2nd pic) , D. saintelucei (Seen in third pic) and a few others including the Jubea chiliensis (Seen in last pic.) That one I’m afraid my wife might fight me on.

So what do you plan on adding this spring? Pics if you have em.

Thank you. I’m keeping it as “user friendly” as I can for now, however, slowly but surely the jungle will probably be taking over.

We still like to entertain on occasion. Below is pic from Super Bowl Sunday before everyone came over. We set up a TV in backyard.

But anyway.......let’s see what others are putting in ground this Spring. @GottmitAlex, I know you have limited space so let’s just hope you have another successful growing season with your cocos.

I plan to add about 30-40 palms this spring. Most still need to be purchased. I have some seed grown stuff, as well as some 5 gallon Chamaedorea radicals, Sabal blackburniana, DioonEdule, 3 gallon Arenga Engleri, Brahea SS ready to go.

Most will be 5gallon & under. Not much digging needed so that's a plus :D

Chambeyronia macrocarpa, and hyophorbe verschaffeltii. And I’m planning on buying another a. cunninghamiana or two.

Right now I have mostly 5 gallon palms ready to go soon here. Kentiopsis Pyriformis, Archontophoenix Tuckeri, Dypsis Lafazamanga, Dypsis Plumosa, Chambeyronia Macrocarpa, and a strange 15 gal yellow Chambeyronia that was sold as hookeri but I think is a rare variant of Macrocarpa. It throws bright golden yellow new leaves vs red.

I had a Butia odorata do that LOL!  But that was because it didn't care for my alkaline soil.  I'll bet yours looks cool though.  :)  My macrocarpa is still too small to produce red leaves if it will at all.

I received some gifts for Christmas and actually planted a couple last Sunday.  Last Autumn I removed a Caryota which had flowered so I had a spot for something.  The palm is an Adonidia merrillii hybrid and my wife like's Cordyline fruticosa so I planted it adjacent to it.  You can see the damage to my Cycas thouarsii x cupida from when I was taking out the Caryota.  Well it's just a couple of flushes away from recovering.  I also have a few small Chamaedorea species to plant and a 5 gallon Dypsis psammophila waiting for a little warmer weather to go in.

Wow Gerg, I don't know how you do it. Your palm density is higher than mine yet you still have some non-shaded areas - I have none.

Spring has just arrived here as of last week. This year I expect to be chopping some of the less desirables - most of my filabustas (just sick of the seeds) as well as my ageing Phoenix Dact.

Haven't placed my order yet but I have now noticed the Spanish guys are selling Orange Crush and I plan on picking up some copernicus and hyophorbe indica also. If my coconut pushes that new spear, as I expect, I will be picking up two or three more as the local German building center has just started bringing them in.

This is also the year I plan on increasing my fruit tree count with another mango tree as well as a Lychee.

Is that one of the Anonidia merrillii hybrids Jungle Music was selling? Either way, I was wondering how those would look and how those would do in So. Cal. Keep us posted on this.

I think it has a lot to do with my garden still being relatively young. I’m sure more shade is on the way in the coming years.

Yes.  It has been at my house since Christmas acclimating in my yard after coming out of their greenhouse which is about 4 blocks east and 1.25 miles south of me.

Spring is already here in central FL...almost.  This morning hit 39F and next except for last night at 39F and next weekend will have 3 nights in a row around 40F.

Right now I have about 30-35 of various plantable sizes (Allagoptera Arenaria, Arenga Engleri, Brahea Clara and Nitida, Caryota Gigas, Chamaerops Humilis, Elaeis Guineensis regular and whole leaf forms, Livistona Speciosa/Jenkinsiana.  Sabal Causiarum and Mauritiiformis) and about 40 Gaussia Princeps.  I also have 20 cycads, 30 agaves and 5 more bamboozles to put in the ground.  And that leaves another 50ish palms that are quart sized or less, so it'll be another year before I have to figure out spots for them... :D

I purchased and planted one last summer. It has been a strong grower to date.

I'm curious to see how it will behave this year.

It would be bad for my pocketbook to live so close to JM.   My brother lives in Carlsbad so I go to JM anytime I go down there (which sadly hasn’t been for awhile). Would also always go to @Josh-O‘s house. Haven’t been to his nursery yet. One of these days....^_^ Most my palm purchases lately have been online/phone orders.

Well you have done an awesome job with your yard transformation in the last couple years or so from what I’ve seen here on Palmtalk. Looks like you will continue to be a busy gardener. I wish my lot was as large as yours.

Thanks!  :D  It's been way more effort and $ than I'd ever think I would put into a yard, but I finally have all the "zones" planted and growing!  I wish I had another half-acre sometimes, but other times I am really glad that I don't.  Too big of a blank canvas is probably just as intimidating as a too small.  Here's my nursery area this morning, now that it's up to 60F.  Agaves on the far right on the ground, palms in the middle and cycads around the corner on the far left.  It looks like I need to go weed the nursery and mow the weeds in the "lawn."  :D

That is my understanding as well, but it is was based on appearance as opposed to knowing a specific plant had cross-pollinated the mother plant for the seeds.  I guess we will have to just wait and see what it looks like as it matures.  When I first saw mine without looking at the tag, I assumed it was a Veitchia.  My wife took my mother in law there to go Christmas shopping for me :laugh2: so that is how I came into mine.

Well Gerg.... or Greg, it has been an adventure this last year since you posed your question on February 16, 2020!  I was out in the garden over the weekend noting how poorly the Adonida merrillii hybrid looks so decided to do another follow up.  While it did grow, as did the Cordyline in front of it in the one photo below, it has a ton of cold spotting (close up below).  So as I ponder your question from last year, I'm considering pulling the A merrillii hybrid and contemplating what to try in it's place.  I don't really have anything appropriate for the spot in the "bull pen".  Everything in my bullpen would either go too wide or wouldn't like the sun exposure after growing above the fence.

What sort of results did you have from last Spring's plantings?   Any major successes or failures you want to share?

Hey Tracy, first, it’s Greg. Haha! “The Gerg” is my handle, or my “rubber ducky” if you will.

Sorry to hear the A. Merrillii hybrid didn’t pan out in the long run, but this way you get to have fun planning it’s replacement.

I opted not to get one after all. Good thing probably.

To answer your question, no, I didn’t really put anything new in the ground last spring after all. I’ve made some purchases and spent time “potting up”. I do think this spring I will however. I plan to replace all my mulching and ground cloth, check all the drip lines and then dig some holes. I have lost a couple palms myself so I know I will be doing some replacing. So hopefully I will have so stuff worthy of sharing soon.

This year (2020) was more collecting than planting it seems.

I'm usually not one for the manicured look, (more Velez effect), but I gotta say your yard looks pretty damn fine.

Well thank you. Originally I was going for the clean “palm resort” looking garden, but believe me it’s morphing into a mini jungle look slowly but surely. I will however keep my open patio area for gatherings. It also makes for room to step back and appreciate the palms.

I do have R. sapida’s and B. alfredii’s less than five feet apart. Also R.regia and B. Madagascariensis about the same. So inevitably my “manicured” garden is going to become quite dense. Perhaps too dense. :D

The clean, manicured look is always nice, but for those afflicted with the palm addiction, the planned and designed garden eventually morphs into the square jungle.

Over time, the ability to plant two new Palms ten feet apart changes to a hard fight just to keep a path. A path to fit both feet side-by-side.

It's all good.
