It's been a strange winter here in NorCal for spear opening as well. My 5 year old Archontophoenix has continued to open new fronds (slowly) all winter long. Very odd, as normally they go mainly dormant from early dec to late jan. The funny thing is, it hasn't been particularly mild this winter either. Kind of puzzling.

Here in my zone 8b in SoCal i had a few palms as well push out new leaves over winter. My Brahea edulis seems to be the fastest winter grower.

Nice work @GottmitAlex!  If they push spears in the winter, they're very healthy!

I have had several Archontophoenix open new leaves this month. We have been blessed with a mild winter so far. But I learned from last year not to breath easy until March 1st. All of my Kings are growing slowly but steadily through the winter. Now if my 2 Roystonea Regia would wake up from their winter sleep I’d be happy.

The only palms in my Northern CA garden “asleep” are Roystonea borinquena, Wodyetia, and Pinanga sylvestris and phillipinensis. All Archontophoenix, Bismarckia, Burretiokentia, Howea, Dypsis, etc. have continued to grow throughout our winter. New Chambeyronia leaves as well. Nothing below 39° but daytime highs have been cool pretty much the whole time with upper 50s and 60s.

You are growing coconut palms in northern California?

Ahh. Growing them (3.5+ years) 4 miles south of San Diego.  However, whenever I mention Tijuana, Mexico, even to famous youtube palm celebrities, the first thing they answer is: "Oh, you can grow anything in Mexico." True story. Even famous "palm" youtubers in Canada "Aloha", have said this to me . (Not you @Rickybobby). As if all of Mexico were a 12a zone.

My region consists of Tijuana/San Diego. Here again, only four miles south of the border and 12-14 miles inland.  That's why I present my posts as Southern California/Northern tip of Baja.

Fact is, I work in San Diego.  In any case, we have a nice microclimate here on the east side of TJ, guess just a tick south from Otay Mesa, CA (San DIego).

South facing all cement, and a tiny sliver of garden where the coconuts are planted.
