Syagrus picrophylla - a pretty & compact Palm

About a dozen years ago I found a seedling of this Syagrus. I planted it on the south edge of our Garden Lot. It has grown much more slowly than my queen palms in the back yard and has turned into a handsome and compact palm. Also, it has not been infected with the fusiarum wilt that destroyed our queens, mules and Washy in 2014/15. This species deserves to be planted much more often. Anyone else grow it?

Hi Meg,

Mixed results for me from this part of the country. My neighbor had one that grew very quickly, but was taken out by gophers when it was about head high. I've had one in ground for a number of years, but mine has been very slow.  My experience otherwise is that they are surprisingly cold sensitive, spotting every winter even with temps well above freezing. It certainly has that "look" of many Syagrus, so I assumed early on that cold would be no issue. Wrong on that count. But you're correct, well grown ones like yours are very attractive palms. I'm keeping the faith that mine will ultimately prevail & reward my patience!

Are these in the same genetic cluster as kellyana and lorenzoniorum? i don't have pictrophylla but i have several kellyana and waiting on lorenzoniorum seed to sprout... I'm starting to doubt they'll germinate.

Maybe. I have two kellyana and they are similarly compact and somewhat stocky. I've never seen lorenzoniorum.

Meg, did your seeds of S. lorenzoniorum fail to germinate?  All 20 of my seeds have not yet germinated after 18 months.

Meanwhile, I sent 5 to Patrick Schafer and they ALL sprouted promptly!  :(

All failed to germinate. I held onto them until they rotted.
