Sabal palmetto 'filamentous' palms give away

Recommended Posts

I've got quite a few Sabal palmettos I grew from seed off a tree with unusually stringy/filamentous leaves in Pensacola, FL. These sprouted in early 2017 and are now outgrowing their pots. I've run out of places to plant, and was thinking of selling, but I'd like to give them away to fellow palm enthusiasts who will appreciate them and provide updates/photos on their progress as they grow. I am very interested to see if they turn out to have the filamentous characteristics as the parent.

Here's the thread where I originally commented on about this tree and the seeds I grew (Note: my comments are further down in the thread and are not pertaining to the tree for which that thread was created) https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/46188-sabal-palmetto-with-unusually-split-leaves/

I live in the Orlando area so would be able to get these easily to many of you- although I'm planning to do some traveling in the near future in the state. Message me if you are interested! and will figure out logistics.

Here's how some of them look now- roots are trying to push out of the pot.

Parent tree- The filamentous/stringy leaves blow very attractively in the wind. Very grasslike.

Regular Sabal p. for comparison

Dunno how I'd get it but I'd become a caretaker if anyone's coming down my way. If it's anything like a regular palmetto they really don't like being disturbed at that size and probably wouldn't survive normal shipping.

Have you grown this Sabal long? Do the offspring grow true from seeds?

Hi Brad! at the moment I'm trying to give them away to those geographically close- but it's possible I might look into shipping or something if I can't give them all away.

I'm not sure- these are my only ones. And I suppose there is a good chance the genetics could be different since there are other Sabal p. nearby.

To me, the leaves on mine seem more wide and flat compared to some other regular S. palmetto I grew that are about the same age.

Other Sabal palmetto I've had that were in a similar situation stepped up into a larger pot without skipping a beat, so I don't think it would be a problem. The big problem I've had is digging a seedling out of the ground.

If you're open to shipping a few, I'd be willing to make it economic. Thanks so much.

Hey everyone- still trying to see if there's anyone in close geographical proximity (FL) that wants any of these. Only if I can't do so then it's possible I might look into shipping some.
