Some images of the Southwest Botanical Garden Okinawa (main island)

Hello everyone,

A week ago I had the chance to pay Okinawa's "Soutwest Botanical Garden" a visit. The garden is located north of the city of Naha, close to

Kadena city.  All in all not more than a relaxed forty minutes ride with the car. The weather was quite good, the moment we opened the doors

to get out, it started to rain... However, it stopped from time to time, the sun came out for a few moments, too - so, after all fair

conditions. The changing weather conditions made it a bit tricky for the camera - I tried my best.

Since my ID skills are still "improvable" please feel free to correct me or help me out when I took a blank.

Here we go:

The garden is located in a kind of valley with (I guess) natural water resources. It is divided into two areas. One sports restaurants, shops and a kid's zoo, there is a bus system

to take you around - so, all in all a place for a family visit. I hoped to see some palms I haven't seen before, I was not disappointed...

Neil,

thank you! To be honest, from all the Bismarckia images I have seen here on palmtalk,

I thought a somehow strange looking Bismarckia, the proportions weren't right...(leaves, seeds and stem)

But there was a label attached to it, so I took it for a Bismarckia grown under not perfect conditions.

Thanks  again -

Lars

Thank you everyone - I am glad you liked it!

I hope I can put together a map (or an overview at least) with all places

worth to be visited in Okinawa for people interested in palms. I think there

are still many gardens/parks almost unknown to non-Japanese travellers...

In order to do this I have to apologize:

I must have somehow switched the characters of this park's name:

It is the "SouthEAST (東南) Botanical garden" - not SouthWEST(!).

My mistake - I am very sorry!

Best regards -

Lars

PS: I know, I am repeating myself, but if someone has an idea about this one...

I know this may sound weird, but I think this one is actually a juvenile Satakentia. Mine had this same phenomenon at that size where it wasn't crownshafted for the first few rings of trunk, and the old leaves stuck to the trunk like that. Once those cleared, the crownshaft became more obvious.

Also, I think the one you labelled "Raphia" is actually an Attalea.

Keith,

Thank you very much for your reply!

It was the fuzzy part of the crownshaft that confused me. I looked intensively

around to see a species similar to it, but nothing stuck out. Looking at the images

again, the fronds are indeed a strong indicator for a Satakentia - you are probably

correct. Time will tell because I am definitely going to pay this place

another visit in a while.

Regarding the Raphia - all I could do was to trust the attached label since I have

never seen a real Raphia or Attalea before... It looked bug infested (eaten off leaves) and

wind damaged (too much cut off fronds as a typical treatment after typhoons, at least

over here) - so I was way out of my IDing-competence...

However, I will try to go there next year again, maybe I will find some answers...

Best regards -

Lars
