Crownshaft Palms with Skirts??

Saw these unique Nikau palms in Akaroa today. Interesting old-man-beard type skirts on them, that I've never seen before on Nikau, from all the old inflorescences, not fronds.

Is this rare, or have y'all seen this on other palms?

I haven't seen that many old inflorescence still attached to a Nikau before. Very cool. Usually they'd just fall off.

That must be very unique, for any species. They developed a use for old inflorescences, like making them into a sweater. Do you know the owners and would you be able to collect seed from any of them? It would be a cool story behind the offspring. Although, the house in the third photo does have some creepy-looking windows. Like they were watching you...

All in all, very cool. The last one was an interesting find on the way to the Shire.

These are just kilometres from the remaining natural grove of Nikau on Banks Peninsula. I wonder whether it is something unique to this 'sub-species'... All the more reason to hike to the grove sometime to have a look.

I've never seen that on a Nikau before. If that's the banks peninsular form it has quite a resemblance to the Chattam island form which is not surprising.
