has anyone used "Pot Umbrellas"

Hi everyone.

 

during the winter it can rain for weeks on end without any sun and I try to use this to keep my washingtonias from becoming to wet during the winter and getting root rot.

its hard plastic cover connected with stainless steel bolts to the rim of the pots.

i also kept some space between pot and cover so i don't get any molt or mushrooms growing in between them. 

however the large leaves seem to catch a lot of rain so they don't seem to be very effective yet as the pots are still quite heavy.

has anyone else tried this in wet areas.

i think it looks rather nice.

That's pretty cool!  Not something i would need here but I can think of places where this would come in handy.  Is this your own invention?

Clever idea, and invention!      Seems it could limit some of the water into the pots......     I don't know anyone using something like this.....yet!

It may keep some water out of the pot. However, it is too low to keep cold water out of the center meristem area of the palms and that's a critical area to protect from winter rain and ice. Also remember that rain entering the crown of the palm will leak water into the pot. I envisioned an umbrella setup above the palms to shield the meristem.

Thanks. I guess it is my invention i havent seen anyone else use it.

Thanks for the reply and yes i know it has its limitations especially considering the leaves are funneling the rain right into the spear.

But i hope its better than having nothing at all. I hope to have some sort of shelter next year so they will be sheltered entirely.
