Thinking of trying a Jubaea X Butia in Raleigh NC.

Raleigh is located in zone 7b but just over the line from 8a. I know some folks  have unsuccessfully tried Butias here but wondering if anyone has tried the Jubaea X Butia hybrid? I believe that is supposed to be hardier than the Butia.

Butia isn't hardy here. Many people have tried. They usually last a few years and then die when there is an especially cold, but not record breaking, winter.

I say go for it but plan on some protection when you get a real bad blast.

I would give it a try just to see. I’ve noticed some older butias growing in Wilson but that’s about as close to Raleigh as I’ve seen them.

Just now, knikfar said:

Wow. I'm surprised they've survived in Wilson. Even the coastal areas lost a lot of them in the 2018 winter.

Yeah, not sure if they survived or not, hopefully they did. It’s been a few years since I’ve been through Wilson.

I saw a Butia with a few feet of trunk in a yard just north of Schenck forest back in early summer.  I don't know if it was recently planted or if it's been there a while though.
