I thought so too. I’ve never grown one so I wanted clarification to give it the proper home. I’m excited.

Which brahea am I? Am I armata?  Looks like B. armata to me.  Could be variety 'Clara' if you are in S. Cal.  'Clara' grows way faster and is not as hardy to frost and not quite as blue.  Dale

Yeah, armata. Will survive like minus eighty in dry conditions and is equally happy on the surface of the sun - so is good in the SW Utah area.

Good score, and just wait until that thing flowers! I love the huge inflorescence.

Not armata - it looks green not blue/gray

But very nice!

That's a little larger than the one I scorred at a palm sale in Houston early 90's! After successful transplant in '93 from the lake to the city- well, it was lost after disaster unnoticed fungal infection after the brutal cold here in '11. My wrong doing that i didn't properly treat with anti- fungals that spring but ya live, ya learn!

Besides, your low-humidity climate there in the high desert will be less of a challenge. I believe much more to their liking as mine was painfully slow to grow, so there's that. I believe the rockies will protect you from this Siberian Xpress we've come under now! It's crazy, we are like to be having 30 year record lows, plunging into "nuclear winter' conditions for the GulfSouth. Thoughts & prayers indeed after disaster last year! :mrlooney:

Some photos with better characteristics for anyone interested:

The “spear” that opened just before winter - not just a fused frond. It has been actively growing as of late

So sad to hear.. but fun at the same time. I like Brahea a lot. Like many, it’s a genus I have long overlooked and have recently gained an interest.

fingers crossed for all the Brahea in Texas.

(Most of their palms, really..)
