Palm nursery wind shelter

Recommended Posts

There is a possibility for our first Santa Ana winds of the season over the next couple of days. I created this wind screen  for my palm nursery on one end of my backyard patio cover specifically for those days. Really not a fan of Santa Ana winds, nothing good seems to blow out of the north or east; and I really don’t have it near as bad as those who live further inland. If I get any winds showing up over the next few days I’ll find out how effective it is at taking the edge off those winds! I’ve left it completely open to the south & the panels on the east and west side can roll closed & latch.

Well done. Let us know how it holds up for you.

Thanks for reminding me. My little potted palms are usually pretty well protected but I do have a few that I should relocate.

Looks good. Should work nicely.

Unrelated, but where do you get those tall square nursery pots in the crate like holders?

Hey Brian,

I know the news channels keep saying that we are going to get Santa Ana's, but the forecast I see show 10-14 miles for us.  What I do during Santa Ana conditions is make sure the palms are well watered.

Yeah im pretty sure it’s gonna miss us; just being safe. The nice thing about the panels is that I can open/close them in 30 seconds.

I use similar shade cloth mounted on T-posts to block the dry summer winds on my palms.  It also blocks some of the intense sun, and keeps the humidity level higher after watering.  Slows drying out.  I believe it will work.

Those are tree pots from Stuewe & sons. I find you get a much better product growing palms in deep pots as opposed 1 & 5 gal round pots. Most palm roots seem to want to travel down & get established before they start to spread much laterally. I feel like you end up with a bigger, healthier & more vigorous palm. That and when you plant you don’t have to end up digging a larger diameter hole for what ends up being a bunch of soil that just falls away when you remove it. The roots I then treepots really fill out the container nicely

Well stated on the S&S pots.

Been using them for years with great results.

Unlike winter, it's our Cali summers and falls which make our tropicals look bad.

Can't control the wind, but we can irrigate.

Did you escape the winds? I sure didn’t. What’s most frustrating about this mess that happens more often than I would like it to is the leaves don’t even come from my yard. I only have palm trees. This mess all comes from the city trees on the street behind me.

But to put it into perspective at least no fires anywhere close this time around.

This was view from house during Thomas fire December 2017. Power was out so only lighting was my blue solar lights and the glow of fire.

Hope all you Cali palm talkers escaped the fires today. Here in Cali, winds bring fire.

Yeah I didn’t really have any wind to speak of,  humidity was down though.  I can relate with the the mess from the street trees though; up till about 4-5 years ago there were large canary pines planted as street trees on the east side of me & I would have to spend 4 - 6 hours cleaning up after those trees hated them sooo much. Was like Christmas for me the day I saw them marked for removal. Luckily for me here in Huntington Beach fires aren’t something I have to worry about. Glad you didn’t end up with any sparking near you this time.

Zilch humidity, moderate winds ( they did break several leaflets on my cocos).

But all in all, it wasn't bad. Let's see what happens come November.:bemused:
