Palms around Virginia Beach

We went to Virginia Beach Last week.  On our way we saw this house with some nice windmills and Needles near Norfolk.

These Yucca were right on the oceanfront.  they looked battered but alive.

On the streetside I saw a few nice Sabals and a small pindo outside a motel

this Yucca is a stark Contrast to the Yuccas on the oceanfront . much nicer crown and much healthier . shows what building protection can do.20190919_114425_HDR.jpg.bce49a2f417aa21a5e3d8d722decdab1.jpg

Keep in mind these are all before you get to the actual Virginia Beach.

Once we got to the actual beachfront , most palms looked either very battered or freshly planted after 2017.  however I did see a few nice older ones facing the ocean.

This Sabal Palmetto has been here at least 5 years according to a local working at a nearby restaurant.

This one also has been here a while according to Streetview.  it apparently gets no trimming and has a lot of seedlings and volunteers.

Of course most palms facing the ocean looked like recent plantings.  here are the "annuals" they plant near the neptune statue

I stayed at the Hilton in March right beside the Neptune statue.  All of the palms looked terrible they were tattered and brown but still alive.

Those palms that they plant there look so bad and I honestly wish they didn't plant them like that. The ones a bit inland or older ones look pretty nice though.

I feel like every year I visit the Neptune statue the palms have been replaced.  The ones away from the immediate coast do very well of course.  They should probably stick to planting them away from the oceanfront.  I guess that's what happens when they're exposed to the cold, desiccating winter winds.  I remember the S. palmettos directly on the coast in SC (away from urban areas) didn't look as good as the ones growing behind the live oaks.

I did see other healthier palms I saw around the residential areas.   Seems while businesses favor palmettos and Butia homeowners usually plant windmills.  here are a few nicer ones in a neighborhood.

I also saw these abnormally nice Sabal Palmetto palms in the neighborhood.  Look straight out of Hilton head IMO

I also saw this large sago clump at that house

The only other living sago I saw was this messy clump near the Atlantic Ave

Speaking of nicer palms I saw some old looking Palmettos at Jungle Golf

Windmills were also less common in the Business district but still many around and most were quite healthy

Notice the small Chinese Fan palm under this one.... wonder how it will turn out in the next few winters.

Nice to see some volunteer Butia.  Does anyone know what species that yucca is with the larger trunk?  I've seen those in Chesapeake and Suffolk as well, but have always wondered what species.

Saw a Washingtonia and Phoenix sp. recently.

Woah where is that? I remember on really old forums (2010 ish) there was someone who had a Washingtonia near the oceanfront that was taller than the power lines that was next to it which helped keep it warm apparently. But it eventually died. I wonder how long this one can make it.
