Foxtail Palm Health (Tampa, FL)

Recommended Posts

I had this Foxtail put in about 3-4 months ago. You can see one of the Fronds is dead, and I’ve lost about 4-5 of them since the tree was planted (combined on both trees). Should I be concerned??

It does look to be growing nice from the crown of the tree, but at this rate I’m losing more fronds than are being replaced by new growth! Hope the palm is in good health, one of my favorite.

disregard the Halloween lights! Lol

Foxtails transplant really well, so I wouldn’t think shock. Maybe planted too deep? I’d talk to the place you bought it from.

Your foxtail is not looking well at all what’s your watering schedule been like since planting? I wonder if the other one is choking it out

Got a ton of water when they were first planted, it rained for a month straight! Lol... the last month on the irrigation system about 4x per week, adjusted for rain.

Have the landscaping company coming out this week to check on it.

How's the soil?

5 year high 42.2C/108F (07/06/2018)--5 year low 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)--Lowest recent/current winter: 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)

They tend to look a bit ratty in Darwin if not given a bit of Dry Season watering... also we have poor soils so they get that 'yellow decline' look sometimes.
But yeah, they do look a bit sad. They are adapted to a 'wet/dry' regime in their natural habitat, so I would lay off on the water in your winter months... don't like cold wet feet.

I see a lot of foxtails around here that appear to suffer from nutrient deficiency perhaps combined with lack of supplemental irrigation.  Most growing on properties in high end neighborhoods look good though.

I would plan on watering your palm deeply at least once per week during the dry season and giving it a balanced time-released fertilizer.
